Relay for Life

Blurb

Andrew Ainsley is a Deadzone-sponsored runner participating in the most intense cross-country race of his life. However, a double marathon through the wilds outside the safety zones will bring trouble he didn’t anticipate.

Marcel Carter has been in love with Andrew since he started running for Deadzone five years previously but never had the courage to ask him out. It isn’t until Andrew is lost that he realizes he’s been wasting time.

Matthew Gibson volunteers frequently for dangerous field missions, leaving little time for real relationships. He thinks he’s ready to put that life behind him until his cousin, Brooklyn, asks him to help rescue Andrew. When the three meet, sparks fly, and Matthew thinks he’s finally found what he’s been missing.

As they fight to survive zombies unlike any they’ve faced before and uncover dangerous government conspiracies, they’ll have to determine if their newfound love is real or if it only exists in the dead zone.

Review

Relay for Life by Jana Downs is the second book in the Deadzone series and has now been added to my favorites list on the e-reader. Andrew is a runner about to embark on a fifty two mile run through the zombie filled wilds. Marcel has been part of Andrew’s team for some time and has been in love with him for years. Once the race begins, things go awry and a rescue team must be brought in to find Andrew. Matthew (Jack’s son from book one) volunteered to assist on the team where he is paired with Marcel and immediately is attracted to him. Once they encounter Andrew, Matthew comes to terms with the fact that he is also attracted to Andrew.

Although Marcel and Andrew have not verbalized their feelings for each other, Matthew is all too aware of their connection and decided to play cupid in order to bring the two men together. Matthew takes his matchmaking one step further and proclaimed his desirability and intentions, thus hoping for a three-way relationship.

S.E.X. is the order of business as I became engrossed in the story; emotionally high and low as each nuance was delivered. There were so many wonderful facets to this book that once I began to read, I could not put it down until it was completed. Ms. Downs is brilliant in her portrayal of Andrew, Marcel and Matthew. She characterized each one independently while allowing them the growth needed to formulate a stable and lasting relationship.

Marcel is the rock and ever-present force in the relationship, giving much of himself for the sake of his lovers. Matthew is the stoic nurturer, who wants to please and take care of his men, and Andrew is the keystone of the relationship. Andrew melds their three lives by leading the others into a quiet calm of peace and solitude. Relay for Life needed to be a ménage; without all three pieces to the puzzle the book would not have worked. Kudos to Ms. Downs for writing the perfect ménage, sans of transparency and redundancy.

I was captivated by each of them. Men and women alike would want to throw themselves at their feet, as they were believable characters with real issues and insecurities. Andrew, Marcel and Matthew displayed an abundance of love for each other and a fierce loyalty worthy of any relationship. A magnificent read.

Definite S.E. X.
A five handcuff review.
