S.E.X. Review~ Commander's Weakness by Caitlyn Fournier

Axel takes over the commanding position at a concentration camp as the commander has business at the capital and will be away for a few months.
The other soldiers mention about how hard it is to meet good women and one mentions a flyer about a company called Single Status for the well off, Axel is disinterested until a note is found on his door that was written on the back of one of the ads and finds a young male prisoner tied up and bleeding out in his upstairs bathroom.
Forced into a rouse of tormentor and tormentee they have to evade the suspicions of the other Nazi soldiers until they can manage to make their escape.
The only problem with the escape plan? They hadn't counted on love.

The anthology Single on Valentine’s Day was a collection of novelettes revolving around Single Status, a web based company offering the single man or woman on Valentine’s Day, the time of their life. I already read one of the books by another author and loved its premise and storyline. As a fan of M/M, I looked forward to Commander’s Weakness, even though I’d never previously read author Caitlyn Fournier. Unfortunately the book was a disappointment on a variety of levels.

How does one find a connection between Valentine’s Day and a concentration camp? Or the tag line “helping you find the time of your life” in a concentration camp? Not possible!   Never have those two ideas melded together to create a romantic novelette.

I was appalled that an author would write a Single Status romance with a tortuous premise. Of scrubbing down bloody floors and tiles and then feeling hungry, as if you’d just decided to dust the furniture. Furthermore, wondering if your “house companion” was hungry, when he was dropped off tortured- bloody and beaten- as if it was your cousin come a visiting?
Nazi concentration camp commander Axel, a gay man who hid his proclivities, was strangely attracted to Wilhelm, concentration camp prisoner. Axel was 27, Wilhelm 17.

The author denoted Wilhelm had been in the camp for three years, captured at the age of 14. Once again, I am not sure where the author’s head was when she paired a 17 year old trauma victim with a 27 year old Nazi? A physically, emotionally, and psychologically damaged person cannot consent to a sexual affair- even if he initiated the act. The precipitated traumatization leaves a person incapable of making sound decisions- consent does not validate the sexual act.

An editing nightmare with third person to first person, language not commonly used in a 1940s storyline and footnotes throughout. Furthermore, a web based site would not have existed in 1945, the basis of the attraction to the anthology, amongst other inaccurate historical elements.

I found the book insensitive and ill tasting; no amount of trigger warnings- if there were any, would have salvaged this read.

S.E.X. Review~ Hands On by Dakota Trace

Single on Valentine’s Day. What a horrible thought – well not really as far as Seraphina Blackburn is concerned. It’s just another commercial holiday done up by jewelry and chocolate companies to sell tons of over-priced crap. She ought to know, considering she makes a living as a high-priced ad executive, who just finished a multi-million-dollar ad campaign for one of said companies. All she’s looking forward to this Valentine’s Day is her annual appointment with the professional dominant who will turn her bottom rosier than any dang valentine – no strings attached – particularly romantic ones. All she has to do is to arrange her date. The only thing stopping her is Caden King – her new sexier-than-hell-but-nearly-ten-years-younger-than-her’ assistant.

Caden King didn’t just graduate at the top of his class from Princeton for nothing. He might be starting out as some ice queen’s lackey, but he had the determination and the drive to make it to the top – including blatant eavesdropping when the opportunity arose. Much to his surprise, his frosty boss isn’t as bitchy as he originally assumed – just a bratty submissive who needs a firm hand to remind her of her place. While he might not be the boss at the work, in the bedroom he ruled. Seraphina was about to be educated about what happens to subs who ignore their own needs - with the help of Single Status, she was about to receive some hands-on training she’d never forget.

This Valentine's Day being single is all the rage. At least that's what the website, Single Status says and they're not trying to set you up with your special someone. But, instead, give you the time of your life. Sign up a family member, a friend or join yourself. Single Status will send an anonymous letter with details of an activity for the day.

Dakota Trace has done it again with her Valentine short and HFN, Hands On. What’s a girl to do when she’s a tiger in the board room but the desire to submit in the bedroom runs hard beneath the surface? The only thing left is to seek out Single Status for a submissively good time of her life~ even if it’s only for one day.

Seraphina was a well-rounded character brought to life by Ms. Trace and her ability to write strong women into her stories. A sense of realism permeated throughout the story as the main character sought to assuage her kink, all the while being true to her nature both as the highly sought after ad exec and the wish to submit after lights out.

Caden, a member of Seraphina’s team, and a dominant with a ‘thing’ for the lovely exec queen, knew just where his needs were best laid~ assisting Seraphina find her submissiveness through the help of Single Status.

The twists and turns of the sexily led scavenger hunt added a new dimension to the short HFN, allowing enough information to be divulged while holding interest. Furthermore, the doors were led open for the author to continue the storyline by delving more into the lives of Seraphina and Caden. Not all tales can be told in one hundred pages or less, as life is not always wrapped in a red bow. But, Ms. Trace left enough on the table to entice her readers to return for additional installments. The characters were real, flawed, and relatable.

Another winner by the queen of sexy.

S.E.X. Review~ You. Forever. Always. ~ K.A. Merikan

---Years of loving in secret. Now the secret’s out.---

Mage. Reasonable. Mature. In love with his best friend’s little brother.
Dawn. Painfully shy. Crazy talented. An anxious cinnamon roll in need of protection.

Mage has always been Dawn’s hero. He’s been there for him when Dawn was bullied, when Dawn came out, and when he joined The Underdogs. He’s also been Dawn’s first and only love—painfully unrequited, since Mage is straight. But that’s only for the better, because they’re bandmates, and Dawn’s brother is Mage’s best friend.

It would all be too intense, too complicated, too real.

But then one drunken kiss proves Mage might not be as straight as he seemed, and their whole world turns upside down. Even though Dawn craves Mage’s love so much his heart could burst, his shyness stands in the way of any future they could share.

While they have to keep their budding relationship under wraps and they prepare to sign a major record deal, Dawn’s anxiety gets out of control. Mage will have to choose between the success he’s always craved and the love of his life.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS:
Themes: rock band, bandmates romance, older brother’s best friend, coming out, bisexuality, first love, anxiety, compromise, music, secret love
Genre: Contemporary M/M Rocker Romance
Heat level: sweet, explicit scenes
Length: ~50,000 words (Can be read as standalone, HEA)

You. Forever. Always. by authors K.A. Merikan was a rocking sweet tale featuring Mage and Dawn. Book 3 in The Underdogs series, and a standalone, Dawn loved his brother’s best friend since he was a teen. Mage always took care of the shy, introverted and gangly teen and watched him become a shy and quiet man with a sweet and giving nature. Mage fell for Dawn, but chose not to pursue a relationship sans adding a new piece to the band’s dynamics.

I enjoyed the story, and I believed the authors did a nice job portraying Dawn’s anxiety. His debilitating nature left him shell shocked and panic stricken, only to be assuaged by Mage’s calming nature or until he passed out with stress. The budding relationship and the next step between Mage and Dawn was sweet and sensitive.

At times I found the other band members attitudes or interactions callous in the face of such a sensitively written character, but I would imagine the authors attempted to demonstrate a normalcy in the world of music, melding it with the world of mental distress.

You. Forever. Always. was a nice read and worth the time.

S.E.X. Review~ Rebound by Andrew Grey

Series: Standalone
Genre: M/M Contemporary Romance/ Sports Romance
Publisher: DreamSpinner Press
Release Date: Feb 13 2019
Edition/Format: 1st Edition/Format ~ eBook & Print
Blurb/Synopsis:
Professional basketball player Bri Early needs a physical therapist after an injury, and he’s heard that Obie is the best. Bri takes an immediate liking to the out-and-proud man with the magic touch, and even though Bri isn’t openly gay himself, he’d never let anything stand in the way of something he wants.
Obie can’t deny that the sexy athlete presses all his buttons, but he’s a professional and has no intention of getting involved with a client. While they’re working together, it’s hands off, no matter how great the temptation.
But being a pro athlete isn’t easy. Bri has enemies, and one of them is making his life hell. When his house is set ablaze, Bri can no longer pretend the threatening messages he’s receiving are jokes. He needs a safe place to stay, and Obie can’t turn his back. But the two of them in the same house is a recipe for combustion that could burn them both….

“Don’t tense up. I’m not going to hurt you.” He kept his touch light, and soon Bri found himself relaxing once again. “So, as I was saying. You need to eat for recovery. Plenty of protein, but make it lean, chicken and fish, plus lots of vegetables and fruit. Give your body what it wants and don’t be hard on it.” He continued working gently. “And no drinking. The body wastes energy getting that out of your system.”

“So, no onion rings, then?” Bri teased with a smile.

“Oh. Those you can have all you want, especially the ones from Blooms around the corner.” Damn, Obie was teasing him back. That was unexpected. “My God, those things are my one weakness. They make them fresh, with a tempura batter that they put a little pepper in, so it has a kick. Then they serve them with ranch dressing.” Obie chuckled. “I don’t think that’s what you were getting at, though, right? But it made me hungry.”

“You?” Bri did his best to sound affronted. “Now I’m starving and the hummus and baba ghanoush I had for lunch just isn’t cutting it.”

“From Mediterranean Garden? I love it there. They make everything fresh that morning, and you can tell by the way it tastes. Yeah, you can go there all you like.”

Obie giggled, and Bri slipped his eyes open to watch him. Obie was smaller with fewer angles and more soft lines than the guys he was usually attracted to, but he was stunning. Bri mentally shook himself. He was not going to have those kinds of thoughts. Not here.

“You’re an athlete, so you know all about eating well. Be good to your body and don’t strain the rest of it.”

“Okay.” Bri let go of his curiosity and let Obie work.

“See, we only have so much juice,” he continued. “So if you strain your arm, your body has to heal both the knee and your arm. But we want all the good energy focused on your knee.” He pulled his hands away, and Bri sat up slowly. Obie handed him a small bottle of water. “Drink up. You need to flush some of the toxins I just released out of your system.” Obie stood close enough to him that his own fresh, clean scent filtered in over the lotion. Bri leaned in slightly, inhaling slowly just to get a little more. He stopped himself a second later, pushing the thought away. That was not what he came here for at all. Yeah, he was friends with Hunter and understood about the whole gay thing. But that wasn’t for him. He couldn’t risk his career that way. Bri had long ago accepted that he wasn’t going to get married. He was a bachelor, he was happy, and he’d stay that way. When he needed an itch scratched, he did so discreetly and always out of town—far out of town. Damn it all, he was not letting his mind go there.

Bri pulled the top off the water bottle and drained the contents. “Is that it?” Bri got his head back where it belonged and away from the interest that certain body parts were beginning to show.

Andrew Grey has done it again with another sure-fire winner. Rebound was subtly sexy and hit all the right buttons.

Bri Early, basketballer extraordinaire was injured in an exhibition game but had little to no luck in his rehabilitation, partly his own fault~ a cantankerous attitude and obviously he had not found the right therapist. Enter Obie, physical therapist who took a personal interest in Bri’s recuperation.

Mr. Grey’s characterization left little doubt in his ability to write realistic personas with flaws and attributes who enhanced others in the book. Obie and Bri were down to earth, both carried trials and tribulations in their psyche and heart, and together they forged a bond which allowed them to grow professionally and personally.

The author attacked their dilemmas head on, and the twists and turns in the book made for an exciting read. Just when I thought I figured out the direction of the book, a wrench was thrown into the mix and changed everything.  The slow burn of the budding relationship was palpable and authentic. The dialogue, the interaction with each other and others, and the backdrop; all added to Rebound’s appeal.

Rebound should not be missed~ but enjoyed with a nice glass of your favorite beverage~ for a splendid bit of romance.

The Knights Club (formerly the Gentleman’s Club) first appeared in the Warfield Hotel Mysteries Series. It was owned by Stony Whitecastle and is located in Atlanta, GA. At the beginning of the Knights Club/Starting Over, Stony is selling the club to Xavier Knight. He renames the club the Knights Club and instead of a private club opens it the public. Some patrons still hold membership though.

This series involves Xavier and his crew of employees and their involvement with a local police family. We meet Sebastian Brady in Starting Over along with his dysfunctional family. Seb’s struggle with his homophobic oldest brother and the shadow of his dead father, Detective Delmonico Brady, haunts Seb as he tries to make a new life for himself.

Occasionally, a character from the Warfield Hotel series will pop up but they are not central to the story line. Everyone who works at the Knights Club has a past and secret they are running from. They are mixed bag of people who have been suffered many things. The Knights Club is their home and the people who work there are their families. But, even families don’t like each other all the time…

Finding Forgiveness - OUT FEB 6

Xavier Knight lied and now his past was catching up to him. Sebastian Brady meant everything to him. Losing him wasn’t an option Xavier was ready to accept. Ghosts from his past threaten to open up a secret that needs to stay hidden. He wasn’t going to let Zach Brady or anyone else take his happiness away from him.

Zachary Brady had lived in the shadow of his father his entire life. He’d lost his family, his job—everything. What happened between him and Xavier Knight was long ago and best forgotten. He wasn’t going to allow it to sabotage his chance to be accepted by his brothers and sister as family again.

Neither man realizes that they don’t hold the key to their peace of mind. And when the truth is revealed, it will shake their worlds. Family isn’t always the one you are born into, sometimes it’s the one you create for yourself.

C. J. Baty lives in southwest Ohio. Her heart, however, lives in the mountains of Tennessee where she hopes to retire some day. The mountains have always provided her with inspiration and a soothing balm to the stresses of everyday life.
The dream of writing her own stories started in high school but was left on the back burner of life until her son introduced her to fan fiction and encouraged her to give it a try. She found that her passion for telling a story was still there and writing them down to share with others was much more thrilling than she had ever expected.

She has a loving and supportive family who don't mind fixing their own meals when she is in the middle of a story, and a network of friends who have encouraged and cheered her on in her quest of being an author.

One thing she has learned from life and she is often heard to say is: “You are never too old to follow your dream!”

I was fascinated by the blurb of Garrett Leigh’s new book, Cash. People who sabotaged fox hunts and all that they entail interested this reader. I will admit I knew and nothing about this “sport”- which I say loosely- and still do not understand it. But, having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed Cash and Ms. Leigh’s writing.

Cash and Rae were destined to meet, whether through the random hookup or the sabbing they participated in to save fox, hound, and horse. The book had it all. Intrigue, drama, an air of apprehension, and of course romance. What I most found interesting and logical, was the slow burn of the budding relationship between Cash and Rae. Aside from the initial hookup, the author delivered a careful building of a very tangible relationship. Both men, entrenched in their beliefs and hurt in the past, worked together through relationship trials and the tribulations of their chosen assignments.

Knowing nothing about fox hunting nor being from the UK, I had a hard time with some of the verbiage, but this did not deter me from enjoying the book. Ms. Leigh has a style all unto herself, one that does not follow a traditional M/M writer, writing more of a story, than an expose on M/M sex.

As with the first book in this trilogy (Lucky), Cash was worth the read!
