Top Shelf was a wonderful start to authors RJ Scott & V.L. Locey’s newest hockey series, Boston Rebels. What I loved most about the collaboration of these two lovely ladies, was they never forget the crossing of other books in their series and always pay close attention to details.

Xander, a hockey player for the Rebels, finally came out as bi. Mason was brother to Eli, Xander’s best friend and teammate. Once the news came to light, Mason decided to take charge of his unrequited love for Xander and move things along.

I loved the banter between oh so serious Xander and his teammates. All a little bit quirky, each man added a nuance that enhanced the storyline. Finally able to be himself, Xander was unrepentant once he allowed his feelings for Mason to come forth. Together the men made a striking couple.

At first, I thought Mason would be whiny and needy, but I was so happy to find that I adored him from the start, as he truly loved Xander from afar, and when the opportunity arose to explore his feelings, he did so with maturity. Don’t get me wrong, there were very funny laugh out loud parts to the story, which kept this reader intrigued and amused.

Back Check by Scott and Locey was an experience in love and life. Isaac raised his toddler niece from the time her mother- his sister- passed away shortly after giving birth. A wild child, Sophie’s mother never named the father, leaving Isaac to shoulder the load of raising a sick child.

Enter Joachim, hockey player who happened to be Sophie’s paternal unit and a life saving match for the bone marrow needed for Sophie to survive her illness and lead a happy and fruitful life.

While the hockey was not an integral part of the overall story, it kept with the arching theme of the series. But the bad-boy, struggling hockey player theme was well done and enhanced the characters. While Joachim struggled with his addiction, his desire to be a father never wavered. In fact, he was relentless which sometimes came out as over the top, yet the author’s characterization kept his overzealousness in check. Isaac’s handling of Sophie was endearing and his love for her radiated throughout. Once he and Joachim got their act together the two men created a new family and bond which transformed the story.

I must admit that when I read a Scott & Locey book about hockey, I’m hoping for more hockey. Snowed did not give a lot of hockey but delivered drama. Kyle, goalie for the Rebels was hurt in an unfortunate accident- sidelined- he headed back to Canada to the small town he grew up in and the man he left behind. Christian loved Kyle and hockey, but his life kept him in Canada until Kyle showed up on doorstep in the middle of a snowstorm.

Snowed was an interesting read and kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the drama and intrigue, but I think I would have like the book even more if it wasn’t part of a hockey series. It was more of a drama.

Did I love the book? Yes!

Did I want more hockey? Yes, if it is in a hockey trope.

But again, did I love the drama? Yes!

Omega Hunted by RJ Scott was a wonderful start to a new series. A scared and tormented omega and a scarred alpha was the backdrop that put Ms Scott into a new realm of writing. As a fan of her work and one of my favorite authors, she never ceases to amaze me with not only her writing ability but the uncanny ability to create new nuances.

I know this is only the first book in the series, but it may become my favorite.

Heartbreaking and heartwarming, Omega Hunted will leave you on the edge of your seat and completely satisfied.

The City Boy & The Rancher by RJ Scott and part of Snow Creek Ranch, a multi-author universe, was wonderful. Thrown together by unforeseen circumstances, Lucas and Jesse must learn to navigate a world where Jesse was trying to save and Lucas wanted to sell.

Hatred and bigotry dotted the storyline, but no spoilers here- an HEA was delivered. The world building Ms Scott created with the first book of the series is sure to set the tone for the rest of the books. Jesse and Lucas navigated and circled each other for the better part of the book, but it was necessary for the rest of the story to unfold. Not to worry, sexy time was delivered and a very satisfying compromise ensued.

The secondary characters added humor and spice, and my hope is that we see them in future books. Ms Scott started a solid series which I hope creates more exciting characters.

S.E.X. Review~ Spectrum & Smoke by Scott & Locey

One firefighter. One hockey player. One slow burn neither of them planned for.

Spectrum & Smoke is a steamy, slow-burn MM hockey romance featuring neurodivergent rep, an assistance dog who steals every scene she's in, opposites attract, and a love story that goes all the way to Game Seven.

Spectrum & Smoke by RJ Scott & VL Locey was a lovely read. The slow burn between firefighter Dane and hockey player Chip was well delivered, with realism and personality.

I thoroughly enjoyed both characters and the acceptance throughout the story line- even with the toxicity of another firefighter.

Scott & Locey allowed the character of Chip to formulate, decipher, and deliver in a style that created realism, acceptance, and love. Both men navigated with each other instead of around each other. Family & friends were written into the story which enhanced and did not distract. It never fails to amaze me how these two authors can captivate a situation no matter what their theme.

Scott & Locey are probably one of my favorite writing duos. Slow burn, sexy time and smiles all encapsulated Spectrum & Smoke.

Never in my wildest dreams would I think I’d be cheering for a psychopath! They’re ruthless killers with no regard for anyone else, right? Well thank you Ms Scott for changing my mind and delivering a new perspective on someone we should all despise.

Novak was part of the Redcars network through Doc- the resident medical fixer. Novak cleans up. And does it very well. But what took him for a loop was Caleb. Obsessed, watchful, calculative, Novak came to care for the hacker even if he doesn’t understand his own ‘emotions’. While Caleb found him strange and weird, he eventually came to understand Novak’s obsessive nature towards him was his love language. Once Caleb saw him for the man who would protect him and the abused children of the world, his heart softened and their relationship ensued.

This series contains grit and determination in a world where evil roams and turns up at every turn. Ms Scott delivered passion and intrigue in each character including their flaws. Should I admire this character and want him to receive his HEA? Probably not. But do I? Absolutely!

Featuring a hockey forward fighting to escape his father’s shadow, a disciplined baseball player who refuses to be shaken, the clash of storm and calm, and a love that proves sometimes the biggest risks are the ones worth taking.

I enjoyed Fly by authors Scott & Locey. I looked forward to Jani’s story and pairing him with a baseball start as opposed to another hockey player was a good choice for this young man. A man who lived in the notorious light of his father; hated hockey player Aarni Lankinen.

The story depicted a lot of emotion, albeit slightly all of the place, and at times the up and down of the roller coaster took me out of the story. The slow burn between the main characters was a nice touch and the love grew at a steady pace.

Overall, I enjoyed Fly and am a fan of the series.

Doc, by RJ Scott was a tumultuous story of survival, instinct, and eventually love. Part of the Redcars series, Doc was probably the most heartfelt and heart wrenching of the books. Born out of necessity to keep his family safe, Doc (Alejandro) was a product of the violent environment he grew up in.

Levi, a cop with a tarnished past, not of his own doing, blurred the lines as a member of The Cave. Together with the characters from previous books, and new important ones, Doc was a roller coaster ride.

Violence was an integral part of the story but romance too. Not the in-your-face kind, but the slow burn of two people who danced around each other, with the hope that something would feel real. Ms Scott delivered everything gritty and suspenseful; characters, storylines, and tainted HEA’s. Everything you could want in a book, but maybe not for all.

Watch for any trigger warnings given by the author, as Ms Scott delivered them with tenacity.

Rough Draft by Scott and Locey was part of a multi author hockey series, The Games We Play Season 2. Angst, humor, and love all found its way into the book.

Walker was a hockey player sent down due to anger issues, told to work on his life both on and out of the rink. Finn was an art teacher who led an interesting group of hockey players who needed to find an inner calmness and learn to deal with their issues.

Walker and Finn were attracted to each other from the start but walked a thin line. Their chemistry radiated throughout and once they acknowledged their attraction, things moved progressively fast.

Scott and Locey wrote about sensitive topics without sugar coating anything. They also infused humor into each character while taking nothing away from their personalities. I always enjoy the pairing of the two authors as their synergy is as seamless as their characters.

This reader absolutely enjoyed Rio, Redcars 3 by RJ Scott. Rio was a larger than life and protective character in the first two books; one who piqued my interest and did not disappoint.

A fighter, not necessarily by choice or nature, Rio and his friends became involved further into the underbelly of trafficking and murder when Lyric, a man from Jamie’s past showed up at Redcars, nearly dead and in need of help.

The overall arc of the three stories is well developed and well written. Ms Scott took careful planning and engaged the reader in all characters from the first book and throughout.

As much as these characters are morally grey, I cannot help but feel for them and cheer for them to succeed in their mission of survival.

Getting a better understanding of Rio only endeared me to him more than I originally thought. He and Lyric walked a thin line of trust and eventually love which brough out a softer side to Rio towards the end of the book.

A series worth reading, Ms Scott’s venture into the darker side has sure hit the mark

Blitz is an MM romance featuring a bad-boy hockey player with a past he can’t outrun, a football legend on the verge of retirement, a forced PR stunt that might turn into something real, and a game-changing journey to their happy-ever-after.

Blitz, Railers Legacy by Scott and Locey was a wonderful addition to their fantastic spin off series. Troubled and closeted hockey player met closeted golden boy football player, and the sparks flew. Trick had baggage a mile long; urges he attempted to suppress, a preacher father who controlled his every move, and a guilt-ridden psyche. Tom was a closeted gay football player, on the brink of retirement and desired love and a relationship. Luckily, the men were thrown together for a photo campaign and soon realized all their desires could come true.

What I loved about the writing style of RJ Scott & VL Locey was they never forget their true nature of the story, warts and all. There was never any sugar coating; hard ache occurred and sensitive topics discussed, but the light was found at the end of the tunnel.

Both Trick and Tom were super likeable characters, with their own flaws yet tons of charisma. From troubled, self-sabotaging hockey player to sunshine football player, both Trick and Tom were able to make the relationship work. Good friends along the way helped pave their true course and Blitz was a nice continuation of characters from Speed.

Trigger warnings for past abuse, murder by fire, intense obsession, dark revenge.

Jamie by RJ Scott was dark with morally gray characters. Part of Redcars, Jamie led a tumultuous life, allowing fire to not only fuel him but keep the spirits at bay. Killian, defense attorney and former Redcars recipient, not only worked in his profession, but also with a group of people who charged forward to take down the corrupt from the inside out.

Although the characters in the book did nefarious things to accomplish specific illegalities, (yes, trigger warnings were given with the book), Ms Scott developed her characters into tangible people who you could not help but cheer for. Sometimes with all the ugly in the world the only way to fight corruption was with fire (no pun intended).

I liked all the men in the book, and much like Robbie in the first book, Enzo, Jamie tugged at my heartstrings. Killian was the calm in his storm, and they made it work. I look forward to learning more about this rag tag group in the next book and falling more between the lines of black and white.

Love Story by RJ Scott was a lovely story set in Harmony Lake, New Hampshire and part of a multi- author series.

Sam, part of a family of maple farmers, loved his family, friends and town. The earth a part of his essence and some place he never sought to leave. Enter Ben, a city boy, with a city job who needed respite from the trials and tribulations of work, and whose great aunt happened to reside in Harmony Lake.

The two men hit if off and soon found romance amongst the maple trees. Nosy family members and nosy best friends added to appeal of the storyline.

A sweet burn with low key angst, Love Story just simply made you feel good.

Grit and grime are not usually words I associated with an RJ Scott novel, but Enzo, Red Cars 1 was exactly that. No warm fuzzies. No sweet platitudes. Hard men with newfound purposes and just enough humanity to find love.

Ex con Enzo and a nefarious group of men lived and breathed Red Cars- given a second chance at life after committing heinous crimes. They protect their own no matter the means.

Robbie fell into their laps after escaping unimaginable horrors, basically left for dead.

The dynamics between Enzo and Robbie was slow burning as Robbie learned to trust his new protector while Enzo learned to accept goodness could fall into his lap.

Ms Scott delivered a new form of writing that immediately transferred from vengeance to underdog to cheering for protagonist with an edge. After getting over the initial shock of the author’s new writing venture, this reader opened her mind and absorbed the characterization; looking past their flaws and embracing these new unlikely heroes.
