Johnnie: Siphon, Book 1

A Premier lion shifter, Hugh Landry dedicates his life to leading the Berk pride with strength and confidence. Hundreds of people depend on Hugh for safety, success, and happiness. And at over a century old, with more power than can be contained in one body, Hugh relies on a Siphon lion shifter to carry his excess force.
When the Siphon endangers himself and therefore the pride, Hugh must pay attention to the man who has been his silent shadow for a decade. What he learns surprises him, but what he feels astounds him even more.
Two lions, each born to serve, rely on one another to survive. After years by each other’s side, they’ll finally realize the depth of their potential, the joy in their passion, and a connection their kind has never known.

Cardeno C. - CC to friends - is a hopeless romantic who wants to add a lot of happiness and a few "awwws" into a reader's day. Writing is a nice break from real life as a corporate type and volunteer work with gay rights organizations. Cardeno's stories range from sweet to intense, contemporary to paranormal, long to short, but they always include strong relationships and walks into the happily-ever-after sunset.
Cardeno's Home, Family, and Mates series have received awards from Love Romances and More Golden Roses, Rainbow Awards, the Goodreads M/M Romance Group, and various reviewers. But even more special to CC are heartfelt reactions from readers, like, "You bring joy and love and make it part of the every day."

I absolutely love a Caredeno C. book and the audio version of Johnnie did not disappoint. Hugh is a lion shifter, a powerful alpha and needs a syphon to hold his powers, lest he implode rendering him weak and unable to care for the pride. Enter Johnnie—a syphon with issues, too many to count. When Johnnie attempts to take his own life, thus mildly incapacitating Hugh in the process, the lion shifter decides that he and Johnnie will be attached at the hip. In the meantime, Hugh and Johnnie develop an understanding based on survival.

Johnnie has always been by Hugh’s side, always in the background, never saying a word. Even the pride members ignore Johnnie, the young man who was only known as the Syphon- no name.

As time goes by, Hugh realizes there is more to Johnnie than meets the eye. The young man is witty, caring, funny, and smart—and Hugh begins to care for him on a level that he doesn’t understand. These feelings soon morphs into companionship, love and a life-long togetherness.

Cardeno C. has taken two very different men and their personalities, melded them together to form a symphony of friendship and love. Together Hugh and Johnnie complement each other as alpha and syphon, but more importantly as mates. Hugh’s strength not only lies in his ability to lead the pride, the largest, strongest and destined to be alpha male, but in his ability to devote his attention and impart his love onto Johnnie. This love reinforces his soul and opens his heart.

Johnnie is narrated by Greg Tremblay and a lovely job he did. The variety of character voices was distinguishable and the inflections in Mr. Tremblay’s voice at the appropriate times allowed me to listen effortlessly and follow the storyline.

Cardeno C. has done it again.
