When the only way to win is to hide who you
are, how far are you prepared to go?
Reuben “Angel” Jacobs is one step away from giving it all up. Losing a place in the live finals of Sing UK almost kills him. He has no choice but to go home and work for the family business, even though it means giving up his dreams and proving his old bullies right.
Corey Dixon is a rocker at heart. Being on the spectrum means that making sense of other people’s ‘normal’ is hard in itself, let alone in the chaos of a high-powered competition. Singing is his safe space, the only way he can think through the noise in his head. Messing up his audition for the live shows means his journey is over, and it’s the worst day of his life.
The judges throw them a lifeline and create a boy band from the near-miss hopefuls. Angel, Corey, and three others are put together in a room and offered the chance to sing as a group. Agreeing to become part of the new band means Corey has to hide who he is and what Angel has come to mean to him.
Is winning worth the price Corey and Angel have to pay?

There are times
in life when a person can honestly say that a book touches their life. Boy Banned by R.J. Scott was such a book. The book reminded of ~ which came first,
the chicken or the egg”. So, in saying that…which came first, the characters or
their attributes.
Ms. Scott delivered
such a touching and heartwarming story that I don’t believe the question need
fully be answered. The flawless writing facilitated a beautifully written tale
of young men attempting to make it into the world of music and oh wait…one of
them happened to have Asperger Syndrome.
Corey, Angel
and the rest of the Wildcard musical group jumped off the pages as I read their
story. Their three-dimensional characterization lent itself to their
understanding of each other and of the connection between reader and character.
Whether you
personally know someone who is on the spectrum or not, Ms. Scott’s writing talent enabled the “state of mind” to flow
through the pages inviting us into Corey’s world and the importance of Angel in
his life.
Corey and Angel
were a beautiful couple who found each other in the most unlikely place~ Sing
UK. Angel treated Corey like he was spun glass, cherishing him for everything
he brought to the table.
The secondary characters
added depth and understanding to the tale and demonstrated the spirit of
resolve and hard work.
Boy
Banned is a book not to be missed.

A five handcuff
review
What inspired you to write your first
book?
I watched a show called
Supernatural (I’m sure no one has ever heard of it – LMAO), and wrote over a
million words of fan fiction, and then I spoke to an author, Chris Quinton, who
said I should give it a try. I haven’t looked back since. J
How much real life do
you put into or influences your books?
Real
life is in all my books, in the way my characters respond to certain
situations, in their frailties and their strengths, and the kind of morals they
have. When people say ‘write what you know’ I don’t think that means *you can’t
write vampires because you don’t know them* or *you are a woman therefore you
can’t write gay*. I think it means that you have to write from your heart, and
I feel that is what I do.
When choosing the title
for your book(s) do you have a process or do you wing it?
When I chose the guy for the front of my
last Bodyguards Inc book, I took one look at him and said he had the most
perfectly kissable lips. Seriously plump and nommy. So, I decided my other hero
was a guy who really liked kissing. Hero one with the lips was called Alex, and
therefore the book was called Kissing Alex. I tend to have titles ready for the
cover art, and I generally have the cover art done before I write a novel, so you
can see that in some parts here the book is informed by the title itself.
Do your travel to
research for your book(s)?
I have
scenes set in towns I have visited. For example, Gallows Tree, is set in a
local village to me, Passenham. I also set a scene in Accidental Hero, and one
in The Rancher’s Son, all based in Chicago. I want to write something based in
Seattle after I visit in October. I travel a lot in my head using Google earth J
Do you have theme songs for your characters or even the
entire book?
I don’t
generally have theme songs, although for Boy Banned this is different and I
have an entire song list. The biggest song in the book is Kings and Queens by 30
Seconds to Mars, which is the song that the band in the book absolutely rock in
auditions.
How would you describe yourself using only five words?
Bookworm | emotional | mum | cuddly | loyal
Bookworm | emotional | mum | cuddly | loyal
Do you have any guilty pleasures?
Chocolate. OMG Chocolate…
oh and wine… the odd glass of wine here and there… oh and superhero movies and
TV shows… and the cinema… and reading with wine… and reading with chocolate and
wine…
