Two centuries ago, Justin was turned against his will into a werewolf - a mindless, angry beast three nights a month. Ever since, he has done everything he can to atone for the blood on his hands, even going so far as to hunt his own kind. The burden of carrying on is heavy and unforgiving, and he’s reached the point of not caring if he lives or dies.
Vincent is a hybrid, half-werewolf and half-human, spending his days, and nights, hunting werewolves. Vincent may be half-monster, but he lives and breathes by his human half. Hunting werewolves and taking down as many of the creatures as possible is all he can see.
A chance meeting changes everything. A deal struck between them, a threat to humanity, and their mutual attraction combined brings them together in an explosive way. Vincent has found the one who can break down the walls around his heart – will he now be able to carry through on his promise to end Justin’s torment, or will Justin live to see another moonrise?
Spell
of the Werewolf
by J.R. Loveless was a different and unique take on the creatures of the
night, and one that kept this reader captivated. As a turned werewolf, Justin
struggled to hold his humanity when the moon was full, and while he hunted the
one who created him. His best friend, Kara, was a nice insertion and gave a
different point of view with what Justin went through.
Vincent
was half werewolf-half human, and in that mixture was able to control himself and
kept his creature side in check. His mission in life- hunt down werewolves and
eradicate them.
Ms.
Loveless
delivered a story not necessarily forged in a love relationship but more a
symbiotic connection of need and desire. Both characters were intelligent men
with desires and heart in a world where the boogey man was around the corner
and enemies & friends blurred the lines. The passion radiated through
whether Justin and Vincent were together or with the people who watched their
backs for years. When Justin and Vincent came together for need, the writing
was on the wall for a chance to do good- better together than apart. Their past
experiences marked who they became, as the author gave us a glimpse of each man’s
start- both with defining moments that enhanced the story.
The
realism in a paranormal book was palpable. A tad bit of humor infused, mostly
this story was dark with a promise of better days ahead. No flowery prose, just
two men realizing as one they were stronger, and love was an added bonus.
Although
an HEA was reached, I always felt as if doom was around the corner for either
main character; a task that is not always achievable by an author with the
ability to keep me engrossed in the tale. But this story worked for me. What
will life bring for Vincent and Justin as they battled the creatures in the
hopes of saving lives, especially Justin’s? No matter what, Ms. Loveless
delivered a great ending with room to grow.
