My favorite of the Campo Royale series, The Barkeep and the Bookseller by V.L. Locey hit all the right feels. Cord and Jagger were well written and defined characters. Each man carried a lifetime of ups and downs yet kept themselves open to new experiences.

Cord was a single father of a wonderful little girl with special needs. While I am not usually a fan of children in a story (unless the storyline revolved around said child), Ms. Locey delivered a happy well-adjusted child without sugar coating any ups and downs. Paloma stole the show. She was high energy and loving.

Jagger yearned for a new life after leaving behind a past that only the strongest could survive. Meeting Cord, Paloma and the family of Campo Royale was just what he needed to give him a new lease on life. Additionally, his best friend Nathan and his brother Wattley added a dynamic that helped pave the wave for Jagger’s success in life, business and love.

Old friends and potential new story lines only added to the appeal. Ms. Locey is a prolific writer who captured the essence of love for everyday people trying to make a respectable living, hard workers, who found family in each other.

The Bachelor and The Cherry was witty and sweet. The second in V.L. Locey’s Campo Royale series, I’m finding I am falling in love with a entire set of new characters.

Jordan, aging queen and owner of a drag club was larger than life as he waded through business and love. Yampier, a much younger man who landed on Campo’s doorstep, took a chance in his feelings for the older man in search of his happily ever after.

The dynamics between the two very different men meshed, creating a dynamic that eased the storyline along. While difficult topics skimmed beneath the surface, I found the book refreshing and witty.

The snip and snap of the men who became queens, the very dramatic yet loving housekeeper, Jordan’s outspoken aunt, and eventually Yampier’s sister - all added to the appeal of the club and the lives they integrated.

Can an aging queen and a young buck mix and match? Only Ms. Locey could pull this off – and yes, she did.

The Viking and the Drag Queen was awesome. I laughed and at times shed a tear. Ms. Locey delivered a beautiful story of acceptance in the face of adversity. As a sports fan, the toxic masculinity can run rampant, yet she allowed Tyr to break the mold with grace and on his own terms. Elijah, on the other hand was pure male in a drag queen persona. Never did the author allow us to forget his fortitude and dignity in a world that can be cruel. I loved all the drag queens, especially Mother. And I especially loved Elijah’s brother and his girlfriend- everyone, heterosexual, homosexual…..needs some in their corner like them.

I can not wait for the second book in Campo Royale, as I need to find out Mother’s story and what made him the club owning fierce drag queen.

I loved everything about this book. From the typical hockey mold to the man who finally became free on his own terms.
