S.E.X. Review~ Final Shot by V.L. Locey

Sometimes family is the light that leads you through the darkest parts of life.

Living the dream. That’s been Dan Arou-Kalinski’s life for the past ten years. That life hasn’t always been an easy one though. Dan has worked hard to get where he is and has faced some major obstacles on his road to success. It’s not always been a rose garden being married to Victor, but his love for his sometimes thorny husband has no bounds. His career has given him years of great success, memories, and championship rings. Yes, fate has been kind to Dan Arou-Kalinski for quite a long time. Looks like destiny is about to start calling in some markers.

The paybacks come due when a recurring health issue turns into a life or death situation and threatens to take him out of the game he loves permanently. Then there’s Victor’s son Jack, a proud and out nonbinary preteen who is living a daily nightmare in a small southern town. Juggling two major life issues is taking its toll on him, and just when he thinks he’s found the path out of the woods, Dan will face an unexpected and devastating loss that will require all three of the Kalinski men to pull together to help each other through the dark times.

Angst and heartache were not in short order in V.L. Locey’s new addition to her Overtime series, Final Shot. Grab a box of tissues because you will surely need them. Not wanting to give anything away, Final Shot furthered the story of Victor Kalinski and his hockey- scapper husband Dan Arou- Kalinski.

The tides of the book ebbed and flowed as the author took us on a ride unlike any other. One minute I was smiling and in the swipe of her words, I was reduced to tears- all in the name of writing a great book.

The lives of Vic and Dan unfolded as did those around them. Toss a genderfluid pre-teen into the mix and all hell was somehow going to break loss.  There was a fair bit of more romance in Final Shot, and we were given a greater glimpse of Vic’s softer side, of which I loved.

As in Rebound, nothing was forced, and every nuance was believable and true to form. The ups and down, the smiles, and heartaches- all a part of the microcosm of life.

Do not say that I didn’t warn you, as Final Shot will have you weeping. I look forward to the third book in the trilogy; Vic and Dan growing older and Jack finding true love.

If there’s one thing that’s a certainty in life, it’s change.

It’s taken Victor Kalinski years to settle into the kind of happiness that he thought he’d never find. The small town of Cayuga, New York, has welcomed him warmly. It’s given him a championship team to coach, a tightly-knit group of friends, a father who he has reconciled with, and a safe place to raise the son he adores. The small town has also blessed him with Dan Arou, his husband and his soulmate, and one of the most skilled forwards on the Cougars. Given Dan’s outstanding play in their recent Calder Cup win, it was inevitable that Dan’s time in the minors was about to come to an end.

When Dan is given a starting position in Boston, Victor’s serene life is thrown into complete chaos. Pride over Dan’s accomplishment fills his heart but facing a long, lonely season in Cayuga is causing no small amount of discord. Add in a wedding that will give his son a new stepfather, health issues for his dad, and Victor’s own penchant for saying things that aren’t exactly politically correct, and the impending explosion is guaranteed to blow Vic’s life to bits. Life-altering choices will have to be made. Will Victor rebound from the challenges, or will he be unable to accept the upheavals that life has dealt him?

I thoroughly enjoyed Victor Kalinski and Dan Arou’s story in Rebound by V.L. Locey. She had me at hockey, and from there things just got better. Rough patches ahead for the former hockey star and his hockey husband, the story took readers through the tumultuous life of players on and off the ice.

Victor was lost professionally, which bled into his personal life, while things were on the upswing for Dan. Fortunately the men had each other and stuck together through thick and thin.

Ms. Locey gave us a story filled with angst and misgivings, but always a healthy dose of love. Vic and Dan played and loved fiercely, and I appreciated that the storyline was not forced. The author delivered believable characters with depth. Depth of understanding in the world of hockey and depth of understanding in life. Pitfalls befell the men, and the realism radiated through Ms. Locey’s characterization. Both men were larger than life characters.

They exuded strength with sentimental nuances, thus making them loveable characters, even through Vic’s rough and ready attitude. They personified sexiness in a non-sexy way- my kind of men!

The secondary characters were handled well, especially Jack- Vic and Dan’s son- a sweet precocious child with a boy & girl heart. Jack’s character enhanced the overall tale and delivered insight to a subject most do not write about. Ms. Locey did it with realism and did not sugar coat anything. She made her men to be open minded while knowing the realities of the world- which I hope many readers appreciated.

The first in the Overtime series, Rebound was a must read.
