This is a 2nd edition without substantive changes from the 1st edition, which was part of the It Was Always You anthology.
Kyle and Brent have an interesting
love-hate relationship in Cardeno C.’s
Rough Edges- although the hate was
one-sided.
Kyle was born poor and made it a
mission in life to better himself and become a solid, hard-working man. Brent
was born rich and never had to work a day in his life- enjoying his spoils on
his own terms. Unfortunately, Kyle’s resentment of Brent left him feeling
disgust, a tad bit shame, and an even surprising dose of lust.
What I enjoyed about Rough Edges,
was the author’s ability to turn unforeseen circumstances into fortuitous
events, thus facilitating a mutual understanding between the two men.
Everything was not what it seemed and the author allowed the story, (albeit
short) to evolve.
Having said that, I also felt
Kyle was whiny and critical about issues that were not of his concern. And
although I believe he did fall for the rich boy, his attitude permeated
throughout the tale and left this reader with a slightly sour taste in her
mouth.
Still, a short story worth
reading, as Cardeno C. never fails
to deliver a wonderfully driven book.
