S.E.X. Review~ Sex & Cocktails by Meredith Russell

Cocktails make a one-night stand seem like a good idea, but Daniel and Ty discover one night is harder to walk away from than they think.

Daniel Rawlings is happy with his nine-to-five life in Chicago. He has an office job, a mortgage and he’s about to turn thirty. He’s happy—or so he thinks. During the last night of a sun-filled vacation in Miami, he meets wild-haired, free-spirited Ty. With the help of some summery cocktails, Daniel and Ty embark on a passionate one-night stand, though neither man really wants it to be just one night.

The thousand miles between cities may make their relationship harder than either man could have imagined. When Ty visits Daniel in Chicago, they grow closer, and Daniel realizes the two of them could be so much more than just the sex and cocktails of Miami. As their time together draws to a close once again, Daniel and Ty have a decision to make. Is what they have when they're together worth the heartache of saying goodbye over and over again?

Publisher's Note: This book was previously published elsewhere. It has been revised and re-edited for release with Totally Bound Publishing.

Sex and Cocktails by Meredith Russell was a wonderfully written short about taking a chance and falling in love.

Daniel was on vacation with friends in Miami where he met Ty, a local who was trying to find his way in the world. One night of passion and a morning of meaningfulness, led the two men to desire more. When Daniel returned to Chicago, the men became closer through phone calls and texts. Deciding to meet up in Daniel’s hometown, the men soon realize that being apart will be harder than they thought and staying together will be so worth it.

Even though the relationship started very quickly, Ms. Russell created enough spice and dialogue for the circumstances to be believable—a vacation fling which ended with a budding relationship.

Ty and Daniel were both loving, well-rounded men who were willing to take a chance on love, tossing aside any misgivings. Sex and Cocktails gave us a snippet of what their lives had become and where they’d go.

Ms. Russell always delivers sexy characters and Sex and Cocktails was no different.

S.E.X. Review~ The Face of Scandal by Helena Maeve

They say first love is forever. They don’t say that sometimes it’s against your will.

Freshly returned from a harrowing visit home, Hazel is ready to put the past behind her. Trouble is, the past may have other ideas.

Hazel’s romantic life has never been more fulfilled than since she’s met Dylan and Ward. With so many secrets and false starts between them, their unconventional threeway relationship shouldn’t work as well as it does. But if recent events have proven anything, it’s that Hazel has a habit of underestimating the boys. She’s ready to start trusting more and doomsaying less if that’s what it takes to cement their relationship into something more permanent. Only ex-boyfriend Malcolm’s surprise return throws her plans into disarray.
Torn between her too-good-to-be-true lovers and the lure of an old flame, Hazel must juggle fresh hurt and new secrets in one final balancing act.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of anal sex, fisting and M/M content as well as references to sexual coersion.

The Face of Scandal by Helena Maeve left my heart bounding and my emotions in turmoil. What a way to end Ms. Maeve’s Surface Tension series. The book was everything I’d hoped for and more.

The Face of Scandal started where A Smile as Sweet as Poison left off. Ward, Dylan and Hazel are well on their way to relationship routine, or at least as much as the three hot-blooded lovers can muster. Ms. Maeve adds a twist into their non-conventional lives―Malcolm, Penelope and Sadie. No spoilers, but the twists and turns integrated into the book were not what I expected but oh so enhanced the storyline.

Malcolm’s snake-like personality radiated through the tale. I needed him to go away and leave Hazel in peace. Ms. Maeve delivers Malcolm's retribution in so-fitting fashion. Thank you!

Sadie becomes a more vital part of book three and shows her true colors.

As for the three main characters, Dylan, Ward and Hazel―all I can say is YES! Their relationship finally takes root and the author allowed us insight into each’s psyche, thus precipitating why each one acts as he/she does and how they truly feel about each other.

In my previous reviews of books 1 & 2, I was always skeptical of Ward and his closed-off attitude. Well, I am no longer skeptical or unsure of him. I loved Ward. More shy and stoic than standoffish, Ward was a lover not a fighter, and for all his dominant traits, he too wanted to be taken care of. Dylan was just the man to give both Hazel and Ward what they desired.

Together the three characters fit like a jigsaw puzzle. Yes they each had their prickly edges and nuances, but together their bond was unbreakable and steadfast―especially in their desire to make each other happy and their resounding love.

Helena Maeve delivered a series which has gone to this reader’s top ten list and one that I’ll enjoy rereading. The Face of Scandal ―Hazel―had the last laugh.

S.E.X. Review~ A Smile as Sweet as Poison by Helena Maeve

When fiery passion can turn on a dime, how far would you dare to gamble your heart?

When proof of a college indiscretion comes back to haunt her, Hazel’s whole world threatens to crumble under the threat of discovery.

Recently tangled in a three-way relationship with her best friend’s one-time lover and his prickly roommate should’ve turned Hazel’s hair prematurely gray. Sure, it’s not the sweeping fairy tale romance she might have imagined as a little girl, but it might just be the next best thing. Dylan and Ward are not only the right blend of domineering and considerate, they also seem eager to treat Hazel to a comfortable life. Whether it’s in the bedroom or the playroom, they are devoted to her pleasure and enthusiastic to help enact her deepest, darkest fantasies.

But while navigating the uncertain waters of such a complicated arrangement proves easier than expected, other areas of Hazel’s life aren’t so well anchored. As she struggles to keep a shameful secret that could irrevocably change the way Dylan and Ward see her, the tethers of the past call Hazel to home and hearth and the artful lure of an old flame.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of bondage, BDSM and impact play, as well as a scene of rape fantasy.

Can things get any hotter for Hazel, Dylan and Ward as they further wade through relationship ups and downs? A Smile as Sweet as Poison rode the roller coaster of life with numerous pitfalls, but with an HEA in sight.

Helena Maeve does not deliver a typical erotic romance with lots of sex. What she delivered was an erotic romance with an underlying story full of intrigue and substance. And oh did I mention lots of steamy sex.

This is the second book in the Surface Tension series and I still question the character of the three MC’s. Each one is so different and Ms. Maeve makes their failings and accomplishments meld together into a cohesive story that drives me to finish the series with them finding their HEA.

Wade has become more vocal but still remains a mystery. Dylan is still the glue that holds them together—his relationship with Wade still a mystery. And Hazel has begun to realize that only Dylan and Wade can truly give her what she wants, especially in the bedroom.

In A Smile as Sweet as Poison, the author gave us a little more insight into what drives Hazel and why she thinks her kinks are her downfall—her past affairs and lifestyle,  the tumultuous relationship with her overbearing mother. Personally, I think her kinks make her unique and fit so well with Dylan and Wade.

The Surface Tension series is one of the best erotic romance series I’ve read and surely should not be missed. Helena Maeve has me hooked.

S.E.X. Review~ Mashing by Sean Michael

Life is good for Toby and Damon—maybe too good. What happens when someone seems intent on destroying their happiness?

Toby and Damon are growing closer every day, with Toby recovering from the shot to his shoulder and Damon trying to keep him from pushing too hard too fast. Things are good between them.

They’re even better in the bedroom, where Toby is learning all sorts of new things and Damon is happily pushing his limits.

They’ve almost forgotten that someone doesn’t seem as happy with their closeness as they are, when Toby walks into his studio to find it trashed and his little apartment ransacked. Are the authorities going to be able to apprehend the culprit before Toby decides the best course of action is to remove himself from the equation?

Sexy men, steamy sex and a whole lot of loving~ Mashing by Sean Michael fits this bill. Damon and Toby are back and delivering every bit of hot love in their relationship.

I adore these two men—their passion, desires and their natural inclination to nurture and take care of each other. Sean Michael keeps me coming back for more as he further delves into Damon’s and Toby’s lives.

Toby, still shy but much more secure in his relationship with Damon is a loving submissive with a strength that mirrors Damon’s. Mr. Michael’s also brought Peter and Christian’s relationship to the forefront and allowed us to further peek into their lives. Christian’s quiet strength radiated throughout the story and I hope we see lots more of them. The four men are completely at ease with each other, a testament to their friendship.

Beer and Clay series should not be missed. As always, Sean Michael delivers a sure-fire winner.

S.E.X. Review~ Held Hostage by Morticia Knight

SWAT officer, Cole, can handle just about anything, until he rescues Brett—a man who makes him question all he’s ever believed about love.

As a member of the Las Vegas Police Department's SWAT team, Cole has seen his fair share of danger, but he's never taken a chance on love. He's willing to have some fun when the mood strikes him, but he's married to the job. Called in on a hostage situation, Cole is prepared for anything and everything…except for the brave and beautiful Brett.

Brett has been burned before, most recently by Officer Parker McLean. He's hoping to settle down in Vegas, perhaps find someone he can build a life with. The last thing Brett's looking for is another man in uniform. But when he meets Cole, there's an attraction that can't be denied. Still, he hadn’t expected to fall for the chiseled alpha.

What begins as nothing more than two people experiencing a great night together spirals into something far deeper. But will Brett be able to handle the stress that comes with having a lover who constantly puts his life in jeopardy? And can Cole risk his heart on an everyday hero, or will the job he knows so well remain his top priority?

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of mild BDSM.

Publisher's Note: This book is best read as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Held Hostage by Morticia Knight was so much more than a tale about a SWAT member, his team and the man he’d fall in love with. Ms. Knight delivered a tale of personal demons which internally hold a person hostage and unable to form lasting loving relationships. Of all the Sin City Uniforms books, Held Hostage conveyed a bit of darkness and sadness that the other books did not have.

Cole was a complicated man. Determined to adhere to his strategic life plan, all which goes by the wayside when he meets Brett, newly transplanted to the Las Vegas area. Both men carry baggage, making it difficult to open to something more.

Cole especially was closed off and slightly self-absorbed, although Ms. Knight gave him a depth that explained his demeanor and soon endeared me to his character. Brett, dealt the short end of the deck of cards in his life, was determined to get past all his upheavals and find happiness.

The two men developed their own form of a loving relationship~ Ms. Knight you had me worried that I wouldn’t get my HEA. No fears. Morticia Knight delivered an HEA— albeit along the hard road—one with hot and steamy sex and a personal growth for Cole and Brett which led them into each other’s arms.

S.E.X. Spotlight~ Testing Lysander by L.M. Somerton

I always knew that Lysander was going to be a photographer. I saw some landscapes by Galen Rowell in one of those coffee table books at a friend’s house and was mesmerised by images. A bit of research revealed that Galen died tragically in a ‘plane crash long before his time and that made his work all the more poignant.

In a retrospective of his work, there’s a quote in the foreword which says, “Galen Rowell was a man who went into the mountains, into the desert, to the edge of the sea, to the last great wild places in the world to be absorbed by their grace and grandeur. That is what he did for himself. For the rest of us, he shared his vision with—click—the release of a shutter, creating photographs as timeless, as stunning, and as powerful as nature itself.”

That was my vision for Lysander. He takes pictures for himself, not just to make a living. His passion for his work means that he lives a professional life without limits. I wanted to explore whether the same might apply to his love life. Picturing Lysander began the story, my earlier short story which set the foundation for the longer adventure that now forms Testing Lysander. And their journey truly is a test—of endurance, of spirit and of love. This story throws the characters into some of the most extreme and demanding situations I could come up with. Caving, climbing, impenetrable forests and psychotic terrorists all feature. Through it all, Brock and Kyle grow closer together, exploring dominance and submission with a backdrop of intense pressure. If they can survive their mission, surely they can survive anything. But it’s never that simple and a return to safety brings its own demands. No relationship is easy but I hope that the love shines through in this story. That doesn’t guarantee a happy ending though… you’ll have to read the book to find out whether the passion endures.

Excerpt
Brock scooped more ground coffee into the cafetière, then filled the kettle and put it on to boil. At the rate he and Kyle were absorbing caffeine, the two of them would be awake half the night. He grinned. That wasn’t a bad idea at all. He may have resigned himself to this being a short-term thing, but he was sure as hell going to enjoy it. It wasn’t every day  a man like Kyle walked into his life.

He took two mugs from the draining board where they’d been left to dry from breakfast and put them on the counter top, fiddling with their position until the handles were aligned and perfectly parallel. The mugs were a sunny yellow color with a daisy pattern around the rim. Ceramic cheerfulness wasn’t enough, however, to dislodge Brock’s thoughts from the dark track they were heading along.

Talking about the trip and all the planning that went into each and every expedition made the danger a bit more real. Brock had spent many months refining every detail of his expedition. The Colombian cloud forests were not a destination to be taken lightly and he was well aware of the risks of traveling in such an inhospitable area. As a legitimate trip, it was still a dangerous undertaking. Add into that the secret mission Kyle had enlisted him for and Brock thought  he might need to up the cover on his travel insurance.

“Not that any insurer in the world is going to give me a policy that covers this trip,” he muttered.
“Stop worrying,” Kyle said from the doorway.

“Stop following me,” Brock snapped back. “I need a moment of panic, if it’s all right with you?”

Kyle chuckled. “You thrive on adventure and danger. Don’t try to tell me that this trip doesn’t excite you, because I know it does. Forget about the terrorists and concentrate on the territory you’ll be accessing. You’ll get pictures  no other photographer is ever likely to see through a lens.”

“There are good reasons why people don’t venture into certain parts of the world,” Brock said dryly.

“And better reasons for taking that extra step, as you well know. This isn’t the first time you’ll take risks for pictures. I’ve seen your work, Brock, remember? You’re even crazier than I am. The shots you took in Irian Jaya—in the Jayawijaya mountains. You had to have been dangling off the rock face by your fingernails to get those pictures.

“Not the same thing, and you know it.”

Blurb

About LM Somerton:
Lucinda lives in a small village in the English countryside, surrounded by rolling hills, cows and sheep. She started writing to fill time between jobs and is now firmly and unashamedly addicted.
She loves the English weather, especially the rain, and adores a thunderstorm. She loves good food, warm company and a crackling fire. She's fascinated by the psychology of relationships, especially between men, and her stories contain some subtle (and some not so subtle) leanings towards BDSM.

I must admit that after reading the first book in the series, Picturing Lysander, I was left bereft and slightly disappointed. But curiosity got the best of me and when I was presented with an opportunity to read and review this book I jumped at the chance.

Testing Lysander was an excellent read. Definitely read Picturing Lysander first because it does set the reader up for this book.

Brock and Kyle are on a secret mission, one that involves both their special talents and a lot of luck. Unfortunately for Brock, luck runs out and his life goes south.

What I enjoyed about this book was the journey Kyle and Brock took together to explore their emotional and physical relationship, adding the BDSM bits. No longer the wishy-washy man I remembered from book one, Lysander Brock was self- assured and confident. He never had an issue with his photographical talent, but his submissiveness had not reached its full potential. A strong man, steadfast in his abilities yet submissive in the bedroom, Brock was a well-rounded character.

Kyle as well grew on me in Testing Lysander. I came to realize the pressures of his secretive work and the organization he worked for made him struggle to find a balance between the professional life he was a part of and the personal one he yearned with Brock. He truly cared about Brock’s well-being and life and the desire to keep him safe was his cross to bear.

Ms. Somerton delivered an action-packed story filled with well-researched back drops that placed me in the moment.

An HEA with room for more adventures, I look forward to Brock and Kyle’s next book.

S.E.X. Review~ Safe Shores by Morticia Knight

Kirk’s Coast Guard lover, Shane, is the only person who can save his son from a vicious storm—if he’s not too late.

Fishing is the only life Kirk has ever known. Born and raised in a small town on the Northern Oregon Coast, coming out of the closet was a struggle. Fortunately, he’s been lucky to find an amazing man to be with who serves in the Coast Guard. But he can’t help but wonder whether Shane wants more than just a shore leave romance.

Shane loves the Coast Guard, loves the sea. That’s one of the main things he has in common with his fisherman lover, Kirk. He just needs to make sure that Kirk knows how serious he is about their relationship and what he plans on doing about it.

Shane and Kirk’s joyful reunion is interrupted when an unusually vicious gale storm threatens the coast. Kirk has to stand by helplessly and wait while his lover battles the raging seas to save his son. In an instant, Kirk could lose everyone he holds dear.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of BDSM.

Safe Shores by Morticia Knight captured my attention and tugged at my heart strings. Kirk and Shane are lovers hoping to create a life together amidst professional obligations and personal insinuations.

This short read was sexy and loving. Kirk and Shane were attentive and caring about each other and the life they hoped to have. I was especially attracted to the story and Shane as the man was near and dear to my heart. Being married to a Coast Guardsman for twenty three years myself, I completely understood the dangers facing Shane and the worries wracking at Kirk.

As always in a Ms. Knight book the sex is steamy and off the chart. I would love to see more of this special couple in the future.
