S.E.X. Review~ Solstice by Eli Easton & RJ Scott

From the dramatic peaks of the Olympic mountain range to the small town of Prophet, murder is only a footstep away.

Gabriel is a former undercover cop haunted by the things he’s seen and done. He returns to his small hometown of Prophet, taking on the role of sheriff, hoping to mend his fractured relationship with his estranged brother and rebuild his life. But when a chilling murder occurs at Sentinel Rocks, a sacred Makah site on Lake Prophet, Gabriel’s dreams of peace and reconciliation are shattered.

Gabriel navigates a web of intrigue, where suspects abound; from local tribal elders to fervent Solstice worshippers and even those hunting the elusive Big Foot. When the brutal murder leaves Duke, a loyal Labrador retriever, as the sole witness, Gabriel stumbles upon an unexpected ally—a local animal behaviorist named Tiber.

Tiber, a newcomer to Prophet, seeks refuge in this remote haven, attempting to escape his own inner demons. Armed with his extraordinary ability to communicate with animals, he offers his expertise through video consultations, helping pet owners with their beloved companions. While he attributes his skill to his academic background, his intuition and flashes of insight owe as much to his Navajo heritage as to science.

With the relentless rain washing away sins and good intentions alike, Gabriel and Tiber must begin to confront their own vulnerabilities and unravel the truth.

Solstice by Eli Easton and RJ Scott clicked all the requirements when I wanted to read a great mystery. Throw in a brooding sheriff and a reclusive dog whisperer, and a sure-fire winner was abounded.

I loved that this book was a titillating mystery before it was an M/M book. I am a huge fan of M/M but sometimes I wonder if M/M books were written for dramatic sex scenes…..not with this book. Easton and Scott wrote excitement, intrigue and the -all popular sexy scenes. A top of my list winner for this summer.

The slow burn of Gabriel and Tiber’s relationship was wonderfully sweet and then bang! Insert the love of all animals and I was hooked. My favorite genre is mystery and as a huge fan of Ms Scott’s Lancaster Falls series, Solstice ranked right up there. I can not wait for the next book in the series.

Excerpt~

“She’s fine.”

I wished he’d just let me talk. “I thought that—”

He didn’t even wait to hear what I was saying, exiting the room and slamming the door so hard the wall shook.

I stared at the space he’d been taking up as if it had all the answers. Five minutes, that was all that had passed in the aborted meeting, and I’d never witnessed such a range of emotions. I didn’t know how long I stared, but it was long enough to conclude that Nick Horner had lost his shit in a spectacular way. I picked up Hannah’s paperwork and shuffled it into a pile—lost in thought when the door flew open again—and Nick walked back in. He closed the door behind him and leaned there, his chin on his chest.

“Christ,” Nick muttered, then pressed his fingers to his forehead.

“Mr. Horner?” I asked cautiously, not wanting to spark anything weird. There were only maybe five steps between us, and I was close enough to see his wet eyes—it wasn’t fear I was feeling, but compassion. “Nick?”

He winced when I used his name. Had I overstepped? Or was there something else going on?

“Do you have a bathroom?” he asked.

I gestured to the end of the conference room, and he headed that way. I followed him a few steps, wondering if he needed something, confused as hell, and when he didn’t close the door but just splashed water on his face, I waited at the doorway for him to talk.

“Do you need me to get anyone?” I asked.

He turned toward me so fast I took a step back. “No—I know there’s something going on with Hannah.” He pressed a wet hand to his chest and left a damp spot there. “I know in here that I’m letting her down because I can’t get my head straight, and she’s carrying a load I should be lifting.” He yanked paper towels from the supply and scrubbed his face, then threw them into the trash can. “I came back to apologize, but…” He pressed fingers to his temples and winced.

“Hannah is an exceptional student, and I just want what’s best for her.”

“I know that I’m failing at this, and if people find out how about her, how do you think this will look to them?” he asked tiredly, supporting his weight by gripping the vanity.

Wait? What? He was upset because he didn’t want people to know his daughter was struggling? “Sorry?” I was angry then. I couldn’t help it, and the irrational side of me spilled out all over him. “Are you saying you care more about your media profile than your daughter?”

“No. What?” He looked horrified. “That’s not what I meant. Of course, I don’t think that.”

“Really?”

“No! Yes. You don’t understand. There are people who think they know me and judge me for every goddamn move my family makes.”

His anger slipped, and in its place was a vulnerability so raw that I took a step closer and raised a hand. I didn’t know what I would do, touch him in reassurance, pat him, thump him for shouting at me? God knows, but he was confusing the hell out of me.

“You don’t know what it’s like for everyone to be watching you all the time!” he said and then slumped.

Listen, Single Dads by RJ Scott was a nice addition to the series. I enjoyed all of the books in the series and Listen was no different. Elliot and Nick were like able characters, yet I had issue with both of them, especially Elliot.

The premise of Nick wanting to open his family to a small deaf child was a good storyline, as was Nick’s life and means. I enjoyed the interaction between Nick, his children, and Elliot’s family, but I found Elliot self absorbed and narcissistic. As an educator myself, it is not in our wheelhouse to stop the potential adoption of a child- that’s for the court system. Further, Elliot assisting Nick in learning to sign was a courtesy endeavor, not court appointed for his opinion- an unprofessional opinion at that since he was an English teacher, not hearing impaired or special education.

Once I got over my slight dislike of Elliot, I channeled my energy into the story, which I liked.

Ms. Scott always develops her story to capture your attention, no matter the emotional Investment.

S.E.X. Review~ Snowed by RJ Scott & V.L. Locey

Snowed

A second chance at love is all Kyle wants for Christmas, but a dark menace from his past wants him dead, and love is second to staying alive.

Kyle Lourenco has carved out a comfortable life and career for himself in Boston. With the holidays quickly approaching, he’s heading home for the first time in several years. Home to his loving parents and the small Canadian town where he was raised. And home to Christian, his best friend and the first man to steal his heart.

Just as a winter storm begins to blow in, it forces Kyle off the road only miles from home and a dark and sinister force from his past creeps ever closer. His only hope is getting to Christian’s cabin before the evil that has haunted him for years finally catches up to him.

Best friends since they were three, Christian Gauthier grew up next door to Kyle, in a remote mountain town with one stoplight and a forty-mile round trip to the nearest school. When Kyle left town for a shot at a professional hockey career, he took Christian’s heart with him. Even though he knew Kyle was always destined for bigger things, it hadn’t stopped Christian from falling for him as soon as he knew what love was.

With Christmas coming soon and a major snowstorm heading their way, Christian shuts the doors to the family store and heads to his cabin, where he will be on standby as an official volunteer for Search and Rescue. He has never regretted staying in Eagle Ridge, but a near miss on a simple rescue leads him to reevaluate everything, and when Kyle ends up at his door, he knows that guarding his heart might not be the best solution after all.

I must admit that when I read a Scott & Locey book about hockey, I’m hoping for more hockey. Snowed, Boston Rebels 3 did not give a lot of hockey but delivered drama. Kyle, goalie for the Rebels was hurt in an unfortunate accident- sidelined- he headed back to Canada to the small town he grew up in and the man he left behind. Christian loved Kyle and hockey, but his life kept him in Canada until Kyle showed up on doorstep in the middle of a snowstorm.

Snowed was an interesting read and kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the drama and intrigue, but I think I would have like the book even more if it wasn’t part of a hockey series. It was more of a drama.

After reading the past books in the series I hoped Kyle would get his tory as I was intrigued by his behavior. Kudos to the authors for not filling in the gaps and hitting us with a whammy in Snowed.

Did I love the book? Yes!

Did I want more hockey? Yes, if it is in a hockey trope.

But again, did I love the drama? Yes!

S.E.X. Review~ Desert Dreams by Scott & Locey

When danger stalks their new home, it’s only their strength as a couple that keeps them safe.

Ryker misses Jacob every day he’s away. At the start of a new Raptors season with everything to play for, Jacob, the desert ranch, and their small menagerie of animals have become an oasis of peace in a turbulent world. He’s never ridden a horse, he’s never considered how much this place would mean to him, but suddenly he’s forming a connection with a mare called Tops and loving every moment of this new life. Balancing hockey with his love for Jacob, he feels that nothing can ever go wrong.

With his life finally on track, Jacob is pouring all of himself into the dream he shares with Ryker. Putting the final touches on Mountain Vista Ranch, a halfway home for troubled LGBTQ youth and their families, fills his heart with pride. When their first clients arrive, he finds himself drawn to the small family and their plight. Little does he or Ryker know that the darkness the newcomers have fled from is following them.

Desert Dreams by authors Scott & Locey, part of the Owatonna U series was a feel good yet emotional story. Jacob and Ryker opened Mountain Vista Ranch, a place for LGBT youth and families to seek solace and transition to a better life. Fashioned much after Legacy Ranch, this place would house therapy animals, counseling, and a fresh start for its interim residence.

I loved the dynamics between Ryker and Jacob. You could really tell they have matured as men and characterization. Their growth enhanced the story and propelled it forward. No longer were they the young rookie and college student; they now were professionals in the hockey world and a business ranch- looking for their little piece of heaven.

Ms. Scott and Ms. Locey never fail to create dynamic characters and with each subsequent book; they took them and allowed them to flourish. The secondary characters were also wonderful. They added appeal and drama, fun and exuberance.

Desert Dreams should not be missed as a standalone, but definitely as part of a captivating series.

S.E.X. Review~ Back Check by Scott & Locey

Meeting Joachim could save his daughter’s life, but it may well cost Isaac his heart.

It’s been one hell of a year for Joachim Löfgren. After a long summer in rehab, he’s been moved to a new town, one far away from the warm Florida sun he so adores, to bolster a struggling Boston defense since the departure of their beloved team captain. He hadn’t even unpacked his skates properly when fate lands another blow, and he’s told that he is dad to a gravely ill child he never knew existed. It’s an easy decision for the burly defenseman to help and he opens up his new home to his child and her guardian Isaac. He’s instantly enchanted with the preschooler as well as her uncle and decides that his life will only be complete if his daughter is part of it. Filing for custody is the only option he feels he has, but this throws his budding relationship with Isaac into utter chaos. The two men soon find themselves on opposite sides of the courtroom as they both fight for the life they feel is best for Sophia.

Despite grieving for the loss of his sister, Isaac doesn’t hesitate to take on the responsibility for his newborn niece Sophia, creating a brand new family of two built on love and laughter. He has a steady income painting pet portraits during the day, but it’s the subversive and satirical cartoons he draws at night that silence his thoughts in the dark. They don’t have much as a family, but he is Sophia’s dad now, and nothing and no one will ever come between them. When a routine pediatric checkup shows that Sophia is ill, it forces Isaac to confront every one of his fears. Finding a matching donor is her only hope, and Isaac begins the journey to find Sophia’s mysterious father. There are no names or dates in his sister’s battered journal, and all Isaac knows is that he’s looking for a hockey player who was nothing more than a one-night stand. Little does he know that finding Joachim could destroy everything.

Lost In Boston - Free Prequel - get free here:  https://rjscott.co.uk/LIB_Master

Back Check, Boston Rebels 2 by Scott and Locey was an experience in love and life. Isaac raised his toddler niece from the time her mother- his sister- passed away shortly after giving birth. A wild child, Sophie’s mother never named the father, leaving Isaac to shoulder the load of raising a sick child.

Enter Joachim, hockey player who happened to be Sophie’s paternal unit and a life saving match for the bone marrow needed for Sophie to survive her illness and lead a happy and fruitful life.

While the hockey was not an integral part of the overall story, it kept with the arching theme of the series. But the bad-boy, struggling hockey player theme was well done and enhanced the characters. While Joachim struggled with his addiction, his desire to be a father never wavered. In fact, he was relentless which sometimes came out as over the top, yet the author’s characterization kept his overzealousness in check. Isaac’s handling of Sophie was endearing and his love for her radiated throughout. Once he and Joachim got their act together the two men created a new family and bond which transformed the story.

Additionally, I appreciated the author’s allowing us a glimpse into the future for the family. Definitely a nice touch.

S.E.X. Review~ Jared by R.J. Scott & Meredith Russell

Jared’s world is turned upside down after Luka hands over his pocket money to hire him as a friend for his lonely, widowed dad.

Jared is good at his job, but his soft heart means that he often finds himself in the weirdest of situations. A kind-of-threesome, a disappearing swan, and a destroyed hotel room are just the tip of the iceberg, but he is a popular boyfriend-for-hire and always in demand. He dreams of working as a family psychologist one day, and as his work with Bryant & Waites is funding his studies, the last thing he wants is to lose his job. At a make-or-break meeting, Jared vows to focus on being strictly professional. Still, almost immediately, he meets Luka sitting on the office steps with pocket money in hand and with a sadness that melts Jared’s resolve. Luka explains that his mom passed away some years ago, and his hardworking father needs a friend. Jared has no intention of taking Luka’s pocket money, but he wants to make Luka smile again, and if being hired as a friend for Luka’s widowed dad is what it takes, then he’s all in.

Being a single dad to eleven-year-old Luka is the best thing in Nate’s world, but add running a bar with long hours, and his work-life balance is screwed. There’s certainly no time for relationships, and even though Luka worries about his dad’s love life daily, romance is the last thing on Nate’s agenda. Owning Rhea’s Bar and keeping his head above water is second only to his love for Luka. His entire world consists of his son and the bar until Jared stumbles into his life. Even though Nate won’t admit it, he’s lonely, and Jared is the first friend he’s made in a very long time. Could their friendship become something more?

Jared, Boyfriend for Hire by RJ Scott & Meredith Russell was sweet and sappy, and a nice addition to the rest of the series. Jared worked for Gideon, a boyfriend for hire, was also a psychology major and something of an impetuous child in a mans body. Jared made me smile and laugh, especially when his boyfriend work led him astray.

Nate was a single father to Luka- a youngster who wanted to hire a boyfriend for his widowed father. On a chance encounter at Jared’s place of employment, Jared and Luka entered into a contract that changed their lives.

Luka was a sweet, sensitive boy who loved his father and would do anything to make him happy- even “hire” him a boyfriend.

Nate and Jared were equally sweet. Not particularly rushed in their budding relationship, the authors allowed them to flourish on their own time and navigate Nate’s hesitancy, albeit years since his wife died.

A quick read, Ms. Scott & Ms. Russell delivered sweet, romantic love that placed a smile on my face.

Blurb

Will broken hearts replace the wedding they dreamed of?

Ryker's heart has space for three things—his family, hockey, and Jacob. As their wedding grows closer, it seems that nothing can stand in the way of an idyllic celebration, surrounded by friends and loved ones. But things appear to be changing; Jacob is forging a future that might take him away from Ryker, and Ryker alternates between pride and fear when a new man comes into his fiancé's life. A hockey season from hell has him doubting his life choices, but worse, he's driving Jacob into another man's arms. How has their perfect life suddenly gone so wrong?

Life has certainly thrown many twists and turns in Jacob's path. Most of the goals he’d set for himself as a teenager had to change, but one has remained constant: finding his heart's desire and marrying him. That aspiration was reached when Ryker said, "I do". Planning their wedding was meant to be the best time of their lives, but Jacob unwittingly puts his trust in the wrong man and finds himself in danger. Is their love strong enough to survive the fallout?

USA Today bestselling author RJ Scott has written over one hundred romance books. Emotional stories of complicated characters, cowboys, single dads, hockey players, millionaires, princes, bodyguards, Navy SEALs, soldiers, doctors, paramedics, firefighters, cops, and the men who get mixed up in their lives, always with a happy ever after.

USA Today Bestselling Author V.L. Locey – Penning LGBT hockey romance that skates into sinful pleasures.

V.L. Locey loves worn jeans, yoga, belly laughs, walking, reading and writing lusty tales, Greek mythology, Torchwood and Dr. Who, the New York Rangers, comic books, and coffee. (Not necessarily in that order.) She shares her life with her husband, her daughter, one dog, two cats, a pair of geese, far too many chickens, and two steers.

When not writing spicy romances, she enjoys spending her day with her menagerie in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania with a cup of fresh java in one hand and a steamy romance novel in the other.

Valentine’s Hearts by Scott and Locey was not what I expected in an otherwise feel-good series. Yes, angst always followed in the Owatonna U series, but this book was heavy. Jacob and Ryker embarked on probably their most important mission to date -their wedding- when trauma unfolded and attempted to derail their lives.

I very much enjoyed the book, and the authors took a profoundly serious occurrence and subject, writing with grace, clarity, and delicacy.  For a novella, the material weighed heavy on this reader.

I adored, as always Ryker and Jacob, as well as their family by blood and extension. The authors did a wonderful job of including those closest to them into the fold and helping ease the way to healing.

Not a typical valentine story, but one that still captured the spirit of true love, in good times and in bad. Scott and Locey, together have outdone themselves.

Christmas and Cupcakes by RJ Scott was a sweet story of two men in the baking-reality show world and how they found love on the Worlds Best Baking Show. Brody and Justin each had their own issues. Former champions in their own seasons- brought together for the championship of champions- they secretly admired and lusted for each other.

I enjoyed both men and Ms. Scott brought realism to reality shows as she dove into the backdrop of filming and the issues with it.

Brody was a scarred man from his previous relationship and Justin was also scarred from his childhood. Yet, they clicked and worked. I loved Brody’s family. Nosy and in your business but with cupful of love and care.

Of course, everything is better with cake, so the baking and chapter titles added more appeal to the story. Nice sweet Christmas read.

Authors

Gifts for the Season by RJ Scott and various other authors were sweet reads of love, laughter, and holiday cheer. Each story was quick to read and attempted to come full circle in a short amount of time and words.

Scott’s tale was set in the Single Dads world and involved a father of triplets and the nanny. Both men wanted more in their relationship, from employee/employer to friends to hopefully lovers/partners. But of course, each man was wary of the truth coming to light. Finally, good things come to those who wait, as in all the stories of the anthology.

I always love a story with children but am amazed at the extent of vocabulary or way of expression authors write small children.

Overall, the anthology stories were well done and kept this reader interested. A worthy cause so definitely get a copy.
