Christmas Prince by RJ Scott was a fairy tale read. Prince Raphael of Montaunoit and British museum curator Marc Chandler may have met by happenstance, but the wheels of chance encounters were soon put aside. Immediately attracted to Marc, Raphael created a conception of a Berneux gallery in order to have Marc close.

I enjoyed the story, albeit the underlying ghosts speaking to the main characters.  That part appeared a tad bit out of place and an afterthought. Marc’s character was sweet and honest, a man who loved his job and wanted to succeed.

Raphael, although a good guy, was slightly pushy, and I could see the spoiled rich boy in Ms. Scott’s writing; very subtle and very well done. Together Marc and Raphael made a striking couple.

The secondary characters were likeable, and I wished we had more interactions with them. But, for a novella, a lot was packed into it, and the storyline flowed and gave way to a pleasant Christmas trope.

The final book in the Christmas Angel series, Shrewd Angel by Anyta Sunday was a play on Taming of the Shrew. My least favorite of the series, Shrewd Angel left this reader perplexed and confused. From the first page, I never became engaged in the story, and found myself trying to decipher what the storyline was to be. 

While I enjoyed Cliff’s character, Pax was a conundrum. But, I found the secondary characters charming and likable.

Centered around an angel who has made her way through time and space, Shrewd Angel appeared out of place from the rest of the series. The previous books were warm and endearing, Shrewd Angel was more abrasive.

Having never read an Anyta Sunday book, I found her writing full of jabs and snark. 

Shrewd Angel was not for this reader.

N.R. Walker is an Australian author, who loves her genre of gay romance. She loves writing and spends far too much time doing it, but wouldn't have it any other way.

A Soldier’s Wish by NR Walker was heartfelt and heartbreaking; a part of the Christmas Angel series. Set in the tumultuous time of the counter culture and the Vietnam War, Gary and his friends arrived at Woodstock for days of music, drugs, and personal growth. Richard, a young man on the verge of fighting for his country, detours after meeting Gary and his entourage. 

Gary and Richard found love in the three days they spent together in the swampy farm field in Bethel, New York, under the rain and stars; sex, drugs, and rock n roll were part of the order

.

Ms. Walker delivered a tale of first love in a time of turmoil and apprehensiveness. Richard’s struggled with his sexuality and his sense of patriotism was tested the more he witnessed in Vietnam~ coupled with his life changing injury and subsequent discharge from the military.

The author detailed the events of the sixties with clarity and authenticity. The emotional upheaval radiated throughout and gave credence to this historical time period. 

Both Richard and Gary were emotionally charged and their story delicately written. I enjoy reading a Walker tale, and my only drawback was the insertion of draft dodging. I appreciated that the author did not make light of a situation which was very series no matter what side of the coin a person fell.

Christmas Homecoming by LA Witt was beautifully written; sweet and sad, this wartime romance was everything a Christmas story should be. Separated by war, Roger and Jack reunited after a five year separation and WWII battles. After sharing a shy yet passionate kiss years before, the two men forged forward through the horrors of war, never forgetting about the love each left behind.

Ms. Witt delivered an emotional trope and I loved every minute of it. Both characters held an essence of sorrow which the author harnessed and created a wonderful holiday story with a realistic outcome. 

As part of The Christmas Angel series, the wooden angel played a role in the story, and I was happy to read an explanation of its existence and how she moved on. Ms. Witt answered those questions with ease, and the descriptors were not disjointed.

Roger and Jack were charming and sweet and completely likable. Their dilemma was challenging, yet through the authors careful writing, the solution was tangible and attainable. 

Christmas Homecoming was my favorite of the series thus far.

The Magician’s Angel was a sweet read of insta lust and quick love. Jordan L. Hawk wrote flowery words in this short novella- part of The Christmas Angel series.

I liked Christopher and Edward. They were sweet men living opposite lives thrown together into the midst of a murder. A tad bit of drama rounded out this story as the two attempted to solve the mystery revealing information about the secondary characters.

Brought together amidst the beautiful wooden angel, another couple found love.

Interesting characters, quick easy read, The Magician’s Angel was worth the time.

Author Bio

Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

Kim’s novel Brute was the 2013 Rainbow Award Winner for Best Gay Fantasy and tied for fourth place for Best Gay Novel.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.

I loved Kim Fielding’s Summerfield’s Angel. Late 1800’s Christmas novella about two very different men brought together by the spirit of a beautiful angel, left me smiling and enjoying this wonderful holiday trope.

Nebraska ranch hand Alby returned to New York in hopes of finding his family, ripped apart by them 15 years prior. Enter Xeno, department store heir and good natured youngest child of Summerfield Department Store.

The banter and easily attained friendship of the two very different men was well described and characterized through Ms. Fielding’s writing. She gave them life and allowed them to emotionally grow.

The historical elements were well done and catapulted me into 1890 New York. The smells, sounds, and bustling metropolis was at my fingertips. 

Part of the Christmas Angel series, Summerfield’s Angel was a treat to read.
