S.E.X. Review~ Cowboy's Law by BA Tortuga

Cowboy's Law

When rodeo cowboy Seth’s best friend dies unexpectedly from cancer, he finds himself taking on a ranch and a bunch of his friend’s younger siblings, because they have nowhere else to turn. Seth loves those kids like they’re his own, and he settles in well to his new life, which is why he’s pretty wary when his buddy’s older brother finally makes it home from a long stint in the military.

Law knows he might get a chilly reception at his brother Pistol’s old ranch, even if the kids living there are his half-siblings. He didn’t make it to his brother’s funeral, after all, but to his credit, he was blown up trying to come home to do just that. He’s fighting injuries and insecurity, but when Seth welcomes him to the family ranch, Law knows he’s pretty much in love. Even if he thinks Seth was his brother’s lover. Can these two find a way to let their emotions out before tragedy strikes their family again?

BA Tortuga is usually an auto-read for me, and I am so glad I read Cowboy’s Law, combining some of my favorite things- sexy men, cowboys, and adorable children.

Seth jumped in when his best friend Pistol passed away- Pistol raised his siblings from the time their parents died. Now Seth has the responsibility of two ranches and five very energetic children.

Law was the eldest sibling the kids rarely saw, but upon sustaining injuries in the military, he was discharged and returned to the New Mexico ranch. Even though the reception was tentative and chilly, soon things thawed, and a rhythm formed into a new life.

Ms. Tortuga has a way of bringing her cowboys to life- the scenery, mannerisms, and colloquialisms- all lent themselves to a believable book of life on a ranch. The main characters were exuberant and large presences, each man feeding off the vibes of the other. I fell for both of them hard, so it is no wonder they fell for each other.

The kids were fantastically written. So many times, an author interjects children into a story and they way they act or speak is completely unbelievable- not in this story. In my minds eye I saw each child and what made him or her special.

The secondary characters of cowboys and ex-military enhanced the overall storyline adding to the angst and love. And, I hope there are more books to come because I already saw the writing on the wall for a few relationships.

Worth the read and purchase.

S.E.X. Review~ What the Cat Dragged In by B.A. Tortuga

A Sanctuary Novel
Don’t people know that cats and dogs don’t mix?
Connor Ragbone finds things. Sometimes it’s gold, sometimes jewels, sometimes people. Set in his hippie ways, he never thought he’d find a pack, but with Sam and Gus and their goofy shifter family, he fits right in. Then he finds Brock.
Shifter Brock Herman is undercover alone, working to break up a poaching ring. The last thing he needs is for Connor to wreck his sting. And now the crazy bobcat just won’t go away!
The poachers lead Brock and Connor on a merry chase all over Western Colorado looking for shifter bears, but it’s a lost pup who brings them back to Nevada and the pack Sam and Gus are building. That’s when Brock has to decide whether he still travels alone or if Connor and his crazy family are where his heart belongs.
This follow-up to Just Like Cats and Dogs is a feel-good shifter romance novel where cats and dogs prove they can be way more than the enemies nature has made them.

Just Like Cats and Dogs by BA Tortuga was on my top twenty list of shifter books and book two in the Sanctuary series- What the Cat Dragged In has now been placed there as well.

Connor and Brock were as yummy as Sam and Gus in book one. Connor found things- his instincts and feelings allowed him to roam, rescue, and sometimes bring home- this time he found his mate.

Brock assisted the Fish & Game Department and a few shifter bears in dealing with illegal bear poaching. Together Connor and Brock tore up the poachers and unfortunately themselves.

Ms. Tortuga has a way with her writing- very distinctive and fulfilling- her character development gave depth to all persons involved and made them come to life off the pages.

Sexy men gave way to sexy scenes scorching the e-reader and placing a smile on my face.

All the characters entwined thus accentuating the world building of the series. The addition of new babies, the bears, and the hint of a third book captured my attention and left me wanting for more.

What the Cat Dragged In was charming, funny, and sexy- adding credence to Ms. Tortuga's ability to write a captivating tale.

S.E.X. Review~ The Wounded Warrior by BA Tortuga

When Luke’s lost everything, the only thing to do is head back home to the ranch and pray that he finds his way again.
When Navy SEAL Luke Blanchard comes back to Northeast Texas after a devastating injury, he feels like the whole world has gone dark. In a wheelchair and feeling worthless, Luke has no idea what to do, even as his twin brother Matt is determined to lift him up and help him heal.
Rory McConnell is a local prodigy, a real estate lawyer with a plan to buy up land before his bitter rival can collect it. When the Blanchard ranch goes into the red, he offers to buy out the debt. Luke backs his brother instead, but he doesn’t believe for a minute that Rory is a bad guy. No one that sexy and fun can be, right?
As Luke claws his way out of depression with a crazy idea to run a therapy ranch, he and Rory start to explore the need growing between them. Will Rory’s need for revenge against a man who damaged him forever come between them, or will it be the force which brings these two wounded men together for good?
Reader Advisory: This book contains fragmented recollection of gang-rape which happened off-screen several years earlier.

The Wounded Warrior by B.A. Tortuga catapulted to this reader’s top ten list. Rory and Luke were larger than life characters with guts and devotion. Ms. Tortuga brought a wounded veteran and an openly gay Texas lawyer to the forefront of her new series Rocking W.

I adored Rory and Luke as well as Matt, Luke’s twin, and the rest of the cast of characters.

A tumultuous start to their relationship, Rory and Luke soon found a kinship in their kindred souls and forged through with their heads held high, albeit the baggage both men carried.

Rory, psychologically scarred from a physical attack, and Luke, a physically damaged war veteran, together the men casted aside their weaknesses for a stronger bond that allowed them to grow as a couple and begin a venture to help other war veterans.

I have always been fond of Ms. Tortuga’s work, giving her books high praise, but The Wounded Warrior may be her best work to date.

The realization through Ms. Tortuga’s words gave authenticity to the underlying story, centering on the horrors which can be thrown in life and the ever-present spirit to move forward. The fine line between giving up in the face of adversity and striving for the best can be tenuous, and Ms. Tortuga allowed both her characters to achieve their goals with dignity and respect, sometimes with a much-needed push, sometimes with a kind word.

The Wounded Warrior is a must read and well-deserving of praise. Thank you, Ms. Tortuga, for showing our military finest in the best possible light, while staying true to their everyday struggles.

S.E.X. Review~ Pulled from All Sides by B.A. Tortuga

Balta is all fire and fury, Joa is his haven. What happens when Raul becomes their third?
Joa is an anomaly on the bullriding circuit—he’s Brazilian but grew up in Texas, so he’s not sure where he fits in. Champion Brazilian rider Balta knows just where he wants Joa to be, both in his life and in his bed.
Raul is new to the bullriding circuit and needs their help learning the ropes. From the start, Raul knows that Joa belongs with Balta, but he also knows that Balta’s career is on its way down and the world is ripe for another champion from Brazil.
When Balta decides that Raul is just what he and Joa need to even out the balance of power, they have to find common ground—professionally, publicly and, most importantly, personally.
Publisher's Note: This book has been previously released elsewhere. It has been revised and re-edited for re-release with Pride Publishing.

Pulled from All Sides by B.A. Tortuga was a nice addition to the Roughstock series~ a series of cowboys and rodeos and the men who loved them. Pulled from All Sides was a sexy ménage starring Balta, Joaquim, and newcomer, Raul.

The men were sexy and the portrayal by Ms. Tortuga grabbed my attention, with her wicked knowledge of the rodeo, and the uncanny ability to spin a story with substance. The infusion of American cowboy with Brazilian speak added depth and character to the book.

Although the story revolved around the three sexy Brazilians, many of the men from previous books had star roles, as the story runs parallel with others in the series.

Ms. Tortuga wrote of turmoil and doubt as she waded through the acceptance of cowboys whom were gay, but also of Latin culture. She delivered the message with tact and allowed the men to grow and flourish in their own time and with each other. A must read.

S.E.X. Review~ Back to Back by BA Tortuga

Landon knows who he wants, he’s been dreaming about Adam Taggart his whole life. Tag, though? He thinks Landon’s too poor, too young, too wrong to be his.
Landon Gaudet may not be the best bull rider on earth, but he knows that’s where the money is in rodeo. His Cajun heart is more involved with horses, though, and with finding the cowboy he’s been dreaming of all of his relatively short life. Adam Taggart has been around the block more than once, and while he thinks Landon is special, he also thinks the kid deserves better than a safety man with more than his share of notches on the bedpost.
Adam does everything he can to resist Landon, but there’s not a man alive who doesn’t love being loved, so eventually he gives in. Landon can’t believe that Adam is finally with him, that his cowboy has finally come around to his way of thinking. The only problem is that Adam isn’t sure he deserves love, or that he really has any to give. He questions everything from his need for Landon to his family’s assertion that he can do better than a boy from the bayou. Can Landon show Adam that sometimes magic is real, and that all you really need is to have a little faith?

Landon finally got his man~ Adam Taggart~ in BA Tortuga's Back to Back. I enjoyed each and every one of the Roughstock series and Back to Back was no exception.

I immediately fell for Landon- his tenacity, spirit, and love of life. Adam was rough around the edges but still had a quiet demeanor and strength which added spice to their relationship and the will to make life better.

Ms. Tortuga always does a nice job of creating realistic characters in true cowboy fashion. My only drawback was that I had difficulty following the 'speak' of this book and found myself re-reading parts of the story.

Past character interwoven throughout added to and enhanced Landon and Adam’s story.
A nice addition to the series.

S.E.X. Review~ Coke's Clown by B.A. Tortuga

How does Dillon take care of Coke when Coke’s destroying himself?
Bullfighter Coke is having a rough time in the Roughstock universe. When his dear friend Sam Bell is injured at the finals of the bull riding season, he takes that and his injuries pretty hard. His very own clown, Dillon, is determined to take care of Coke, which is tough when Coke is usually the one to care for everyone. Coke has a huge secret from his past, though, and, when Dillon digs to discover what it is, the skeletons in Coke’s closet threaten to destroy both men.
Publisher's Note: This book has been previously released elsewhere. It have been revised, re-edited ansd significantly expanded for re-release with Pride Publishing.
General Release Date: 12th April 2016

I always enjoyed the Roughstock series by BA Tortuga and Coke’s Clown did not disappoint. Book 4 continued the saga of the bull riders and clowns and the lives they led both in and out of the arena.

Coke is the self-proclaimed patriarch of the group- always helping others while doing little for himself. His lover Dillon had lots to say about those incidences. Dillon and Coke made a great couple~ loving and secure in their relationship.

Ms. Tortuga clearly does a nice job of sticking to the rodeo reality in her Roughstock series~ the way the men speak, the rodeo appeal, the authentic-ness~ although, at times in this particular book I had to reread a section more than once, confused as to what exactly the character was saying.

The story gave the reader more insight into the comradery and family atmosphere of the rodeo; bringing in characters from previous books.

Always enjoyable~ Coke’s Clown was worth the read.

S.E.X. Review~ File Gumbo by B. A. Tortuga

Beau is riding like the two-time champ that he is, but nothing is assured in the world of bull riding–not happiness, not wealth, and not survival.

Beau is a two-time champion bullrider who is working on his third title. Sam is his long time lover and traveling partner, who is feeling the sting of having just about the worst season he can remember. The two of them are on the road together twenty-four seven, and it's starting to get to them a little, between the constant injuries Sam faces, and the relentless press that Beau has to put up with. Add in friends on the circuit who need their help and the fact that they have to hide what they mean to each other, and it's no wonder that Sam and Beau's relationship starts to wear a little from the friction. When things blow up in their faces, Sam leaves the bullriding tour for awhile, but the boys find out they're far more miserable apart than they are together. Beau and Sam may agree to disagree in order to make peace and help out their friends Jason and Coke, but in the unpredictable world of extreme sports, nothing goes as it's planned. Can Beau and Sam recover from what just might the last ride of Sam's life?

Publisher's Note: This book was previously released elsewhere. It has been re-edited for re-release with Pride Publishing.

Wow! Sam and Beau were electric in File Gumbo by B.A. Tortuga. The ease in which the two men wore their skin and interacted was nothing short of a sensual escapade.

Working the rodeo circuit was back-breaking work for the cowboys, riders and clowns. And it’s no different for the long-time partners, Sam and Beau. Hard ache and tragedy befell the men and patience and love from each other and their friends uplifted them~ turning misfortune into riches.

Ms. Tortuga delivered a beautifully written story of love and friendship and the sacrifices made for those that are most important in your life. I loved the down home feeling which radiated through the author’s writing as she transported this reader to the hardships of rodeo life and the agony the men endured.

The cowboy speak at times confused this city girl, but I got the hang of it and fell into the characterization and dialogue.

Tickled that Sam and Beau got their story, File Gumbo was a sure-fire winner.

S.E.X. Review~ And a Smile by B.A. Tortuga

All Coke Pharris wants is for his cowboys to be safe—all of them. When rodeo clown, Dillon, sets to prove that there’s more to the bullfighter, people could get hurt.
It’s Coke Pharris’ job to save bull riders from bulls, and he takes his work very seriously. Which is why he’s devastated when one of his favorite riders gets hurt, and he’s determined to help the young man ride again. Dillon Walsh is the arena entertainer for the bull riding tour, and he wants to help. He also wants Coke, has been admiring the man for a long time. He hasn’t made a move on Coke for fear of messing up their friendship, but when he finds out Coke might feel the same way, Dillon has to try to win Coke over.
Coke thinks he’s too old for Dillon, too beat up and scarred, but he can’t resist when Dillon finally makes a play for him. Dillon is like a wet dream for Coke, and the two of them have a great time getting to know each other better, at least until the danger of their job threatens to come between them. Will Dillon and Coke be able to help their friend and weather the problems that blow their way?
Publisher's Note: This book was previously released elsewhere. It has been re-edited for re-release with Pride Publishing.
And a Smile by B.A. Tortuga was a down-home book of cowboys, bull riders and the men that kept them safe. The second book in Ms. Tortuga’s Roughstock series kept me enthralled and enamored.

Rodeo clown, Dillon has finally snared his cowboy, Coke and has no intention of letting the man go. Coke, on the other hand needed a bit of convincing, always claiming he’s too old for Dillon, (yet he was only three years his senior~ something which perplexed me).

I loved the chemistry between the two men and was glad that Coke received his own book after being introduced to him in Blind Ride. Dillon and Coke were perfect for each other and melded in personality and desire.

The synergy created by Ms. Tortuga radiated through the pages as she delivered true cowboy dialogue with attitude and flair.

Ms. Tortuga wrote of the unflappable bond between the men on the circuit and the feelings they have for each other~ always looking out for the next man with care and love.

And a Smile was more than a” book two” in a series. It was the continuation of a difficult life for the rodeo troupe; all the characters intertwining throughout the stories. Jason’s blindness, Blind Ride, was furthered discussed with possible resolution for getting him back in the ring, thus leaving the door open for further books to follow his story.

All the men of the Roughstock series have hutzpah and guts, making them endearing and charming. Tough stock with a dose of love and sexy~ the men of the Roughstock series are enough to make any red-blooded American swoon.

S.E.X. Spotlight & Review~ Blind Ride by B.A. Tortuga

Jason Scott has everything a bull rider wants—success, money and traveling partner Andy Baxter. When he loses his sight in an accident, he stands to lose it all.

Jason Scott is at the top of the bull riding game, on his way to a winning season. Along with his traveling partner, Andy Baxter, he’s riding hard on the circuit, working around the country with all of the other bull riders and bullfighters, living the good life. The only thing he wishes he had is Bax, but he’s afraid to take the step that would make them more than friends, worried that it will ruin everything.
When a terrible accident leaves Jason unable to see, his whole life goes south. Jason decides to chuck it all, determined to go home and hide at his momma’s ranch. Bax has other ideas. He wants to make sure his best friend doesn’t give up, and he hatches a plan that stuns Jason and makes their friends and family think he’s crazy.
With the help of the other bull riders and a very persistent bull fighter named Coke, Bax convinces Jason to give life one more try. With Jason cautiously learning to hope, and his relationship with Bax going to the next level, life gets pretty complicated. Everyone gets in on the project, from Jason’s strong-willed mother to an entire ranch full of children, all of them working to help Jason do what he loves.
Publisher's Note: This book was previously released elsewhere. It has been re-edited for re-release with Pride Publishing.

Blind Ride by B.A. Tortuga was a beautifully written story of friendship, love and tenacity. Jason and Bax, friends and rodeo co-workers for many years, travel the dusty roads bull riding and supporting each other as only best of friends could. Along the way each man fell in love with the other but never acted on their desires. Tragedy brings their friendship to the forefront and soon their lives take a very different turn.

There were so many things I loved about Blind Ride. Ms. Tortuga delivered camaraderie between lovers and friends that created a bond which no one could break.

The cowboy speak catapulted me from my suburban home to the laid back hills where ranches and cowboys reside, making me an integral part of the scene. The authenticity was as genuine as the people Ms. Tortuga wrote about.

Each supporting character played an integral part of the story and was not simply thrown in for the sake of a moment. No fluff in this tale, pure substance.

A love story with men who lead hard and dangerous lives, but somewhere in the midst of it all found friendship and love along with an extended family that would weather any storm.

Food and Texas

One of the things that folks say about my books all the time is that they make them hungry. I get it. Totally.
I swear to God, I have eaten all over the country, and in a couple of others, and there’s nothing like food back home in Texas.
What? You don’t believe me?
Tex-Mex. Chicken fried steak. Pintos. Peach cobbler. Texas Sheet Cake.
Brisket.
Oh, God.
Brisket.
Juicy, delicious, crunchy on outside, tender on the inside glorious juicy meat.
Uh. Where was I?
Right.
Texas cooking.
It’s an obsession. We have the Poteet strawberry festival. The Spam festival in Austin. There are county fairs with funnel cakes and deep fried everything and…
Oh.
Corny dogs!
Those were invented at the Texas State Fair.
When I left home (deep east Texas) for Monterey, California (many, many, many, MANY years ago), one of the things I took was a list of all my favorite recipes from my momma. Yeast rolls, layer salad, biscuits, banana bread, potato salad, enchiladas, chicken fried steak.
Cornbread.
I still have those little pieces of paper. I don’t need them anymore; all those recipes are memorized. But I have the originals. The pencil marks are faded, the folds… well, let’s just say that when I unfold it once every few years to tell me wife the story of when I wrote them (she’s a patient woman), you have to not breathe too hard on it.
When I write Texans, which Bax and Jason truly are, there’s always a momma that shows up, someone to take care and cook and love on her sons, both born and adopted. Cowboys have appetites, you know, and sometimes a Texas momma is the one doing the feeding.

Recipe for Cornbread:
1 c. flour
1 c. corn meal
1 T baking powder
1/2 t. baking soda
1 t. salt
2 T. sugar
¼ c. oil
1 c. milk
1 egg

Put a cast iron skillet in a hot oven (425 is best) with a quarter stick of butter. In a big old bowl, mix dry ingredients, then add wet and stir. When the butter in the pan is melted and bubbly, remove from oven and add batter to skillet. Bake for 16 minutes.

Excerpt from Blind Ride:

Damn, life was good.
Bax liked riding fence. Well, all right, if he was honest, he liked riding fence with Jason. Somewhere after the first hour, Jason would take that starched shirt off and tie it to the back of the saddle, leaving him in just a tight, white undershirt, and damn. Oh, damn, Bax loved that.
Licking sweat off his upper lip, Bax leaned down to check a post joint, grinning when it wasn’t as dry rotted as he’d thought. “You think your momma’s baking right now?”
“Yup. She’s making a pie and one of them cakes you like. I saw beans on the back of the stove, so it’ll be brisket and cornbread for dinner.” Mini’s momma was as predictable as the day was long and, lord, that woman loved to cook.
“Oh, you know I like that.” Damn, his knee was throbbing. He pulled his bad leg up, leaning back in the saddle and stretching it out.
“You need to walk some, man?” Jason rode up closer, horses touching noses as Mini reached out, touched his knee. “It’s pretty swolled.”
The feel of that hand on him made him jump, even through work glove and jeans. “Nah. I’m good. I just need to remember not to lean so hard on the stirrup.
“‘kay.” He was given one more stroke—the crookedy thumb on Jason’s riding hand rubbing the inside a bit.
His cheeks heated up, and he was damned glad of the sun. Long as they’d been riding together, Bax’d never told Jason a bit what the man could do to him with just a touch.
“Anyway, we ain’t got much more to do today.”
“Nope. You want to ride to the river? Swim?” That straw hat was pushed back, the collar of Jason’s T-shirt wet with sweat.
“Shit, yes.” That water would be like bathwater, but it would be so damned nice to get wet. Bax approved. “Come on, slowpoke.”
“Slow… Oh, you old bastard!” Jason whomped Heidi, the two going tearing across the pasture, ass tight as a boar’s backside in that saddle.
